Evening,

This evening I started preparing for my fist service and I'll be doing the 12K service.

Looking for 5W-40 API SL / JASO MA2 is proving to be a nightmare all the oil on ebay comes from mainland EU and in motorworks they only do 10W-40. The Castrol SAF-XO is proving to be the same.

This is driving me nuts. I know 5W-40 is a lower temperature oil so I'm thinking 10W-40 will be fine and go with the Castrol Power 1, semi synthetic along with 75W-90 GL-5 from Halfords.

Thought I bounce my thinking off the experience of this forum and also hopefully get pointed in a good source for the service items.

Cheers

I can’t help much, only to say that I have used Motul 10W-40 in my 2015 GS since I started doing my own servicing 5 years ago with no problems. The weather is warmer down here though.

I’m sure someone will be along soon with a more local based knowledge.

Motul 7100 (5w-40)

But I suspect mention of oil just might bring on a twitch, or worse, amongst some on here ;)

have you looked for this in Halfords https://www.halfords.com/motoring/m...-oil-fully-synthetic-5w/40---5ltr-724328.html

the website does not mention JASO MA2 but it is motorcycle specific so checking the label in store might elicit the required spec.

Amazon have the Motul https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Motul-10...&sprefix=5w/40+motorcycle+oil,aps,407&sr=8-14

I was looking for Castrol on Halfords, the oil does meet SL spec. Motul is an option

I’ve used these folks in the past (to France)

https://www.misteroil.eu/en-eu

And these, they also have OEM oil filters

https://www.eurobikes.uk/

Motul 7100 5W40 for me too + Motul oil in the FD

I'm wary about buying from the EU, I've heard of occasions where the buyer gets charged excessive customs fee's.

Really useful list

Absolutely, but not at 9 euros a liter

I find that so many Brits come over here and try to save a few pence on everything when they live here. I know someone who put 4 rolls of loft insulation into his small hatchback to save about €2 per roll.
Here you are less than €9 per litre, saves the import duty. HERE

Interesting observation, maybe true in the Dordogne, I don’t know

But I didn’t really just “come over here”, I’ve been living and working here for 24 years now and I’d be fine with saving a couple of quid wherever I was living

In a dim and distant past life I used to re-shell cars for a living before changing careers completely, so I also actually enjoy doing a bit of routine maintenance on my GS

I pay to have my Kawasaki serviced because it’s still under garantie and I pay to have my X3 serviced because I can’t be arsed and I don’t have a ramp :nenau

Yes, that’s the first site I linked to, used them last year (by the way, that’s 10W40 not 5W40)

Why do you need a ramp to service your X3

I do my X4 with no problems with axle stands, jack and homemade drive-on ramps made from wood ……

Try Westway oils on ebay, they seem to have most things i need and are well priced

I found the below, meets the spec.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122458571634?hash=item1c83198372:g:2jsAAOSwczxdruDs

Comparing to Castrol & Motul, Westway is almost half the price...... I have never heard of them have you used them? Their eBay reviews are very positive.

I found this thread on here https://www.ukgser.com/forums/showt...icants-5w40-Fully-Synthetic-4-Stroke-JASO-MA2

Why is engine oil such a black ....

Thanks for all the guidance much appreciated.

I use Elf semi synthetic oil - same as what BMW sold me when I bought oil for my 10,000 km service

I was quite surprised that they don’t sell their own branded bike oil

Anyway that doesn’t solve your problem

Doesn’t the new import duty only apply after a certain order value though ?

Don’t want to turn this into a political thread but maybe if Brexit hadn’t happened …… just saying
