I am writing this from my bed in the Kings ward of the William Harvey hospital :D It was a stupid biking accident really and I wasn’t even on the bike.

I’m new to the world of motorbikes. Up to 2008, I had never ridden one, nor was I interested. But it was “long way round” which got me. As soon as I saw that series on TV, I just knew it was for me – I was hooked. So I started lessons, passed my test in the autumn of 2008 and had an F800GS by December the same year.

I was aggressive in learning off road skills, teaching myself in the green lanes of Kent backed up with a few books and You Tube videos. I must have fallen off my bike 80 or 90 times by now, but all to get strong at the skills I would need to take me around the world. In 2009 and again in 2010, I found myself riding down to Morocco to ride the dunes of the Sahara and to have fun in the Atlas mountains. Morocco is a wonderful country for adventure riding.

This year in May I was to leave for a 6 week ride around the Black Sea, taking me through Croatia, Bosnia, Turkey and Russia, but that won’t happen now.

I was taking advantage of the bank holiday weather to brush up my skills, so was out in the country riding the lanes. It was a school boy error… standing on the pegs doing a slow tight turn on rough ground and stalled the bike. I was off , but no damage done. I have picked that bike up so many times before and even when it’s fully loaded with luggage. So I grabbed the bars and pannier rack and started to lift, pushing slightly because the bike was lying on a slope. Then SNAP my achilles tendon at the back of my heal snapped, my foot folded up to my leg and I was down :eek

I had an operation yesterday to rejoin the tendon and face 6 weeks in plaster before starting a physio for 6 to 12 months.

So be warned, lifting techniques are important after all. What if this had happened on a trip!

So that’s my little story. This year, I’ll be that person staring as you ride by and may be If I’m lucky, I will catch the end of the summer myself.

Ride well.
Steve.

Thats the first time i`ve heard of someone doing a tendon like that:eek:Get better soon mate and remember there is always next year :thumb2

OUCH!!!

Sorry to hear that. But you're gonna have to make up a better story to impress the girls... you know something about how you were sliding around a bend at 90mph or it was while you were riding through the desert ;)

I know how you feel.

I spent most of a summer in hospital a few years back. Over 35 years riding bikes, and I smash myself up falling off a ladder.

Let's hope for a speedy recovery!

Thats real bad luck, hope you get better soon mate :)

Like you say worth learning to lift the bike properly!

Hope it heals well. Tore my calf muscle after my 640 cough-stalled on the threshold of my garage and I tried to push it the last foot. Couldn't believe how painful that was, so a snapped tendon sounds awful. :eek

It can happen. My next door neighbour is currently in plaster and hobbling around on crutches. He was playing tennis when his Achilles tendon snapped. He's in his 30's, fit, mountain bikes black runs....

Sorry to hear that.
What kind of boot were you wearing? I am surprised it didn't at least give your foot enough support to not fold like you mentioned.
You were wearing a heavy boot, right?

The boot was made of Gortex so a lot more flexible than leather. I find gortex a lot better in hot climates. Stronger boots would have definately given more support.

Bollocks - unlucky mate!

Just think though, you can sit with your feet up an enjoy the wedding on Friday..:comfort

Seriously though, that was sh!tty bad luck ... HOw old are you (I take it you're not a sensitive girly type) only asking cos I know how long sometimes these tendon/ligament injuries can take to heal and how much extra work you have to do to get it all working again once you're over 50 ..

I'm trying to visualise how you'd have done the damage - were you trying to lift it 'uphill'

Oh dont go there. :blast
i actually 'feature' in our company training video on "Manual handling techniques".
I broke my L4 vertabrae picking my R100GS up off the road. Knees bend/back straight and all that. It just went 'click' / i felt like i'd instantly shrunk an inch or two and promptly collapsed.

had it for 18 months before it was diagnosed.
Then the resulting tests, X rays and physio revealed that i also have
~ osteoporosis
~ artereo sclerosis
~ arthiritis of the spine
~ 'a touch of' emphyesema

i've to inject myself daily with a male version of HRT :D to encourage bone growth, the physio i was sent to is scared to do much with me 'in case i break' and the endocrine specialists love me for the challenge i give them!

The thing thats gets me - i was o.k til i went to the doctor. :pullface :D
Oh, the funniest bit to me is that on the recent Gambia On a Gapper/ Tossers In The Sahara trip (see my sig) none of this gave me any trouble.
At all. :thumb2
But the two discs i slipped 25 year ago - gave me fecking agony on a good few days. :tears

Hope you are up and ..er... running soon. :comfort

I'm 45 so well into the mid-life crisis :augie

Yes, the bike was on a slop and the wheels were up the slop. I should have spun the bike on the peg so that the slop was working with me. With hindsight, i was i little stupid.

Oooooh

Feel for you there, did the same thing to mine playing rugby. I played prop and the second row behind me swore he heard it go:eek

Hurt like feck, especially when I collapsed and most of the rest of the scrum also landed on me, one bloke fell on the affected area!! Apparently ( I can't remember as my mind has blocked it out:augie), I screamed like a girl!!

One thing though, I did as the surgeon said, rest, physio etc and it healed fast and touchwood, I've had no probs since.

Speedy recovery to you:thumb
