Suddenly having problems with my NAV V, keeps switching off and starting up again.
Only seems to happen when fitted to bike (Scram 411) not tried it yet back on the R1200 GSA

Yes, as part of this issue I had I did completely clean and reset the Nav, and the response speed has greatly improved, especially connecting to my Mac.
Many recommend doing a full reset after an update has been installed to help the device work better / more consistently.

I’d suggest you start by trying it on the other bike. At least that way you’ll know if it’s a problem particular to the bike or the device.

If, when you’ve tried, you find it’s only when attached to your Scram that the shutting down occurs, I’d start by making sure that the pins of the cradle are:

A. Clean

B. Free to move. They are sprung, so the pins should depress slightly. The can get stuck in the down position.

Clean the contact points on the rear of the device, too.

In other words, ensure that a clean contact is being made between the device and the cradle.

Await your words…..

Sorry for the late replies.
Tried a hard reset. The initial stats on until the engine is started, then it cycles on and off.
I’m got to try it on my GSA tomorrow.
Thanks for the help .

Mine does exactly the same thing randomly power cycles, I did a 3 hour ride in France about a week ago, it power cycled 3 times during the ride.
I have since put the latest updates on it, but doubt that will be the cure. Haven't had a chance to test it yet

Also as stated above I'll check the cradle and rear of units contacts, however my Nav 6 doesn't do it both are used on a 1250GSA.

Will keep an eye on this thread for more wisdom :)

I've had a similar issue with my nav 6 (latest cap touch version).
I followed the garmin troubleshooter advice which was:

Clean the screen
Clean the contacts ( I use a contact cleaner spray on a clean bit free cloth)
Reformat the card
Latest software update

I'm just testing it now across a couple of bikes with a nav holder to see how things go. I've had a couple of rides now with no issues but it's gonna need more testing over time to see if it's sorted fully.

Tried my Nav v on my GSA dies the same thing.
Strangely only when the engine is running, same as on Scram!
Tried an update this evening, I’ll check again tomorrow to see if it’s still the same.

OK, we now know that it is happening on both bikes, identically.

This is just a wild guess. When a modern vehicle starts, it switches off the power to some items, such as sat nav devices. For some as yet unknown reason, maybe your Nav V does not pick-up up on the power when it’s re-established?

I assume that the device’s own internal battery is in good health and fully charged?

Have you tried connecting the device, when either of the two bikes are running? In other words, putting it into the cradle, after the bike has been started?

Charged Nav overnight and charged Scram battery. Went for a 70 mile ride today and all good.
I think it is the Scram battery.
I’ve fitted a new one when I got back, I’ll see how I go on.
Thanks for the advice.
Enfield batteries are know to be crap

You gave the device a good charge and it was good for 70 miles. Maybe that (and not the Scram’s battery) was the solution?

I’ll find out next time I go out.
The internal battery should charge when it’s on the bike.

Indeed it should. But, if the device’s battery is very low, the device sometimes doesn’t receive enough juice to run and charge simultaneously.

You are blaming the Enfield’s battery, but in post #10 you found that the same happened when you tried the device on your GSA, too. Is a GSA’s battery / alternator / charging system, known to be crap, too? As it happens on both bikes, that would seem to point to the device, not the bikes.

When the device is on both bikes and the engines running, is there a lightning flash symbol displayed through the battery symbol on the device’s screen, indicating that charging is taking place? Is the lightning symbol displayed all the time that you are riding around, indicating that the device is receiving a permanent live feed?

Maybe it happened on the R1200 because the units battery was very low.
New battery on Scram and 3 rides of 70 miles+ and , touch wood, it’s ok so far.
Thanks for all replies.

Hopefully put a lid on this. New battery on Scram and the Nav V is behaving itself.
RE electrics are shit!
