After many years of thinking about it I finally took the plunge and on Thursday got the train 500 miles south to Stevenage where the next morning I bought a PD. It looks a very tidy example and rides really nicely on the upgraded suspension. It also goes well with the head having been rebuilt by Overland and Classic a few years ago, followed by a new clutch this year.
I had a good ride home with a night in the Dales on the way, albeit with a summers worth or rain finally falling when I chose to ride home.
First impressions were after a couple of hundred miles on the A1 and were mixed, the next morning on small damp roads in the Dales I loved it as, with an early start, the only traffic was a pheasant and we dealt with that via the headlamp guard.
Footrests - I need to lower them and Pete has suggested Migsel so I’ll check his out and probably get some of them.
Brakes - I had low expectations and they didn’t disappoint, hence perhaps hitting the pheasant. Is this the original brake? It seems to be the size of it rather than the bigger upgrade
Screen - thinking about it, I’m surprised at the angle compared to a modern GS where the screen is almost vertical but it does work, airflow mostly onto my visor. I’ll see what alternatives are out there that would fit straight to the mountings.
Side stand - seems to be the original but I managed with it so no need to change right now.
Fuel - after 500km I bottled and stopped to fill up, the range is huge and filling the tank doesn’t have the top heavy effect I expected, very impressed.
Centre stand - eat your porridge first!

Great bike, really put a smile on my face, hoping for many miles to enjoy it.

It’s been pointed out to me that I made an error in the thread title, Basic when it should be Classic. My mistake. I’ll see if a mod can adjust for me.

No. That's not the original brake or disc. I think? Someone has done an upgrade with a twin pot caliper from a later bike. Maybe it just needs an overhaul? You'll also have to adjust your horizons somewhat. Literally! :D

I’ve had several airheads and a couple of PD’s, but not a classic and yours looks good. Rest assured that’s an upgrade from the original brake, but shocking compared to more modern variations, as is the brake dive.

I was advised it was an upgrade, I only questioned it because a lot of photos of similar bikes showed that disc. I’m not a heavy brake user generally so I’ll cope. But, might still go for that 320 disc mentioned earlier!

I would certainly recommend that you do so!
Chalk and cheese, so it is!

The 4 pot caliper is not original. I fitted one with the original disc and it didn’t make much difference. The 320mm disc (with the original 2 pot caliper in my case) is a big improvement.

I bought mine 3 weeks ago and love it. Similar to you, I got the train to the location and rode it home back to the North East of England (obviously not as far as Scotland)

Great bikes

Enjoy!
