I will look at MyRoute-app but it seems you have to pay to make it reasonably functional Maybe it’s worth it monthly fora touring trip?

MyRoute, possibly confusingly, comes in two (arguably three) parts:

1. The Cloud based route creation application, more properly known as ‘MRA Routeplanner’. This itself comes in two parts, too:

i. A free to use basic version.

ii. An enhanced version, available at a fee.

Either version will allow you to create a route (or routes) and export it / them in GPX format to use on your BMW device.

2. The navigation app, more correctly known as ‘MyRoute app’. This is available for a fee, allowing the user to navigate the GPX route(s) they have created in Routeplanner (or elsewhere) on their phone and / or mirror the route on a separate screen, such as via Apple CarPlay.

If you plan to create a lot of routes and / or use MyRoute Routeplanner regularly, I’d go for the paid version. MyRoute have regular sales, so keep an eye out.

If you only intend to use Routeplanner to create routes, create a GPX file and export them into your BMW device, you have no clear use for the navigation app.

It's all going to be down to how often will you use it, to decide if it makes sense for you to buy a subscription.

I bought the lifetime subscription (after buying a lower tier initially), as it is my 'go to' tool for trip planning. And i knew it would be for many years moving forward. I use it to plan all my big bike trips (at least 1 a year to Europe for 2 weeks), and local trips too when i want to go for a Ride out somewhere on 'new to me' roads.

The benefit i see in it is that i can use it across multiple navigation platforms which allow the import of a .gpx file. So whether i stick with Garmin, move to Tomtom, or use other routing hardware/software i can still import routes from one system. Which means all my routes are saved in one place, and i can share them when out and about to my devices, or those on a trip.

OP, post #3 as I read it, relates to the Coud based ‘MRA Routeplanner’ as opposed to the separate MyRoute navigation app.

it was indeed! I tend to use the planner more than the navigation app due to my set up on the Bike.

I've used it multiple times in the Car, and found it a good app.(comparing it to Waze).

I started out with the cloud based online - working on my pc then using the routes on my zumo
Now have the App on my iphone and still use the cloud on my PC for most of the planning.
Its the garmin Zumo XT that doesnt really get used now.

I think the subscriptions are worth it.

for my travels to Gran Canaria this year i planned my routes initially then subscribed to the myroute app for one month to use these when i was away.

it worked perfectly.

So one needs separate subscriptions to both the online version and the app ? Or does the gold version online give you all the features of the app?

This is the "route" I took.

I was on holiday all last week in Tenerife and used the app on the Android auto screen in the hire car. No complaints.

I used it today to run this convoluted route on Android Auto on my Africa twin.

I tend to use my XT these days for a extended view as it picks up more roads in the distance. I didn't even run the route on it today.

I’ve been a gold subscriber for several years. I use it for route planning and one of the features I like is it ignores road conditions, such as mountain passes closed in the winter. I don’t think I’ve created a map on it and uploaded it to my XT2.

What’s navigation next? I’ve got a promotional email on that. I assume its exactly the same thing as MyRoute-app and it has two names confusingly.

That's the navigation phone app. Its now very good and works with Android Auto as well as the (Superior IMHO) native phone app. The big advantage is that with the route planner the route is WYSIWYG with what is planned....which the newer Garmin units are not with basecamp or the Garmin app based planning software.
