Need a little help...bike has cut out

Glad you got back safely, it sounded like quite a challenge, well done
Thanks. It was bit of a week for sure.

To be honest, one of the biggest stresses was planning for various potential scenarios, but having no control over lots of the factors...

I plan to make a couple of posts listing things I've learnt that are possible useful to others.

One last closing detail.

Riding back the bike seemed very happy, like it's actually running better. When hot, the idle is really positive, at higher speeds (130kmh) it's almost hungry for more and rolling on up into higher figures was dead easy and smooth. It reminded me of when it was younger...

One thing I noticed (once I was out of the rain) was that at around 130-135kmh, if there was a concrete barrier lining the central reservation, I used to get this fast, staccato pulsing in sound/reverb off that barrier - bike felt fine - I sometimes wondered if it was a misfire or a coil was misbehaving.

It was absent on the ride back...so I am now seeing this may have been a symptom? Combined with the above, it seems likely?

The whole thing! It was a dealership remember , no half measures from them.

Oh Fugg!! I hope they gave you the old one!! I don;t think they are service exchange parts

I can just imagine the bill but you were probably just glad to have a solution???

Didn't get the old one...but while the bill was big. It was significantly less in the end than I feared.

To be honest. In the old days I remember a swap effectively done for motors/alternators etc. Hand over the old one and get the recon one for whatever cost. So not getting it doesn't strike me as so bad.

So the voltage regulator is part of the Alternator, = ergo you need a new alternator = Kerching

This is a voltage regulator

They normally just bolt into / onto an alternator ;)

I had a car alternator fail years ago - mega money to relace the whole unit,

Took it to an alternator specialist £20 odd quid for the regulator :D

One of the easiest ways to maximise your repair £200 needs a new alternator mate :D when a £20 part will fix it

It may be the VR is integral and dosent come as a stand alone part , wouldnt surprise me

my Merc has a replaceable unit - Bosch list 5 suitable parts

£32 designed to die next day
£36 designed to die next month
£45 OEM spec designed to almost reach the end of warranty
£72 designed to be almost worth having
£132 never fails designed for russian built models

As usual the Useless Turd "BOT" resurfaces with Useless information

Fuck off You Twat!

Oddly enough, I'd never heard of reg/rec failure on a hexhead until about a week before your issue, when a mate phoned to tell me his new-to-him RT was overcharging and killing batteries, 3 in just 100 miles before the problem was diagnosed. Then your tale of woe arose, so maybe a more common issue than we know?
I've suffered the cracked alternator case myself so well aware of that one, I just wish it was possible to source a replacement new alternator from somewhere cheaper than BMW.

An update I hadn't expected...

Washed the bike this morning. Mostly to remove any of that remaining salt from Switzerland, but all just to give it a once over.

So, I spot a number of little details that are not right (oil pipe up RH side of engine casing has a big flake of paint missing. RH engine bars not fitted correctly). Nothing particularly 'bad'.

But after drying all over with a cloth, I came to start it up as I always do, just to help dry it off.

Nothing! Just like before!?@#£&! I tried one more time then smelt burning electrics. Switched off immediately. Disconnected the battery. WTF 🤬

I had planned to remove the tank anyway to check over everything and maybe put it all back correctly. At least I'm at home!

No idea what's going on. I did wonder if the young mechanic, in his effort to disconnect ALL accessories has left an open ended plug that has not got wet. But I'm not optimistic...

Watch this space!
