need help with wiring

Wiring

Hi Foolish

I would fit a relay activated by either the green or grey wire from ignition switch to fusebox using a Scotchlock. I know many people dislike these but they've never let me down as I thumb a blob of grease in each end after fitting to prevent corrosion.

Make sure that you have appropriately rated inline fuses for your accessories and that all wiring is well secured.

Squid......I know I'm new here but sorry, that made me shudder...Scotchlocks are evil evil evil.......specially in any situation where they are/could be exposed to any shaking, moisture or critical functioning......like ignition switched supplies on a bike!

K, you put grease on them but they're just unreliable IMHO in the long run.......In one of my previous incarnations i fitted car alarms and stopped using them after several faults....damn hard to track sometimes and just not worth it..

Surely the time it takes you to dig out your grease and coat the mofo would roughly equal the time it'd take to do it properly with a nice crimp terminal?

More reliable and a lot neater too......

is there not a suitable tap off that i could use
I def do not need a relay as the current draw would be v. light

( not spotlights)

Forget the scotchlok, if you use the wrong size on the wrong size cable, you could be asking for trouble, solder is King with amalgum tape(can't spell)to make it waterproof. There is a spare terminal in the fuse box you can use, if you don't have heated grips, you can use the loom.

re; Scotchloks

Friend of mine is an automobile electrical specialist; fits & repairs alarms & audio on cars - real top end stuff, just 'done' a Ferrari with £44000 of hi-fi! Anyway, he told me some time ago that Scotchloks are the bane of an auto electrician's life; cause lots of faults that are hard to pinpoint as they are esp. good at giving intermittent problems. Suggest that, if you do use 'em, remember the above & head for them 1st if a problem subsequently occurs.

Take that tank off and the power connectors are then exposed, examine the ignition lock wires and note the colours and where they go to the connectors, using a test meter probe these cables until you find the one which is 0V ignition off and 12v ignition on.

Then using wire cutters strip off 1 cm of the sheathing of this wire WITHOUT cutting the wire and then SOLDER the wire you want to attach DO NOT repeat DO NOT use scotchblocks they are for muppets who do not know any better, check all the connections and insulate the exposed joint with tape, preferably self amalgamating, this is not sticky to the touch but it sticks to itself and amalgamates into a homogeneous lump.

check all the work again and if OK refit the tank.

Job done

When I fitted the GPS to my Adv, I tee'd into the power socket
wires alongside the dash.
Agree with the scotchloc criticisms, I use a crimp on tube connector that has a heatshrink outer and contains a glue. You crimp it on, get the industrial hairdryer and it heatshrinks, glues and seals the connection. Made by Wurth cost about a quid each. Totally reliable.

Ref the Ferrari stereo install, we did a £56,000 Alpine F1 status install into a Jeep Grand Cherokee last year. It was a great project, took 5 months!! Not rushing to do another..

Scotchlocks

"specially in any situation where they are/could be exposed to any shaking"

As I said:- Make sure that ........ all wiring is well secured.

"examine the ignition lock wires and note the colours and where they go to the connectors, using a test meter probe these cables until you find the one which is 0V ignition off and 12v ignition on."

As I said:- Either the green or grey wire from ignition switch to fusebox.

I repeat, they've never let me down. Twenty plus years, ten kit cars, three tow bar socket relays etc, etc. Like anything else, if properly fitted, they won't go wrong.

"DO NOT use scotchblocks they are for muppets who do not know any better." Thanks Jimb, don't bother sugar coating it next time, tell me straight.

Usual disclaimer.
