I'm thinking of investing in a network drive. Has anyone got any recommendations, hints & tips on things I should look out for and how much I should pay?
What will it be used for? Home use? Business use? Backing up critical data or storing media files? Single person use or a house full of teenagers?
If you have some, minor, technical ability then consider buying a cage separately to the drives. Think about buying a cage with capacity to expand so you can add extra storage as needed.
Will you be using it as storage for a PVR (like a Sky+ box) which will be located in your lounge? If so, get one that runs quietly.
It's a piece of string question. Personally, I'd reccomend the Synology Diskstation (DS) series, for home use something like a DS209 or DS410j (or a slightly earlier version of them). Not only do they do just what's on the tin, they also have good web based front ends for admin and some potentially useful extras like an inbuilt web server or bittorrent client.
