I'm trying to set up a network with my two home PCs. One is running Vista, one is running xp. Both are connected to internet via the same belkin router, Router is connected to phone line, both pcs connected to router by cable.

Printer is connected to the xp PC.

I want to share files and share printer.

How do I set it up?

Help please (feel free to assume I'm a dummy!)

run the Network Setup Wizard on both machines. it's in the side bar of the xp network screen IIRC.

right click on any files you want to share, look at the Sharing bit and set the permissions.

Bear in mind that this advice comes from a complete computer numpty....
Couldn't you buy an external hard disc and copy your files over to that and just swap your computer usb lead over to whichever PC you want to print from?

not just a sexy avatar hu...

yep that would work, but you've got everything there you should need to do it already Cookie's suggestion is about right, it's just going to be a question of sorting out permissions and privilages - best bet is set the same users/passwords and rights up on both systems and you should be 80% of the way there
