I have a PC with 98, my wife has a laptop with XP.

Used to be able to connect with direct lan no problem. Now have a broadband router. Able to ping one from the other by IP address but not by computer name, so can't share files and printer.

Also installed XP SP2 at about the same time as the router. So not sure where the problem lies.

Tried looked MSN but left me totally confused.

Any ideas would be warmly recived. Sorry, make that constructive ideas.

XP and 98 often seem to have problems talking to eachother........

Can you not put XP on the laptop...makes it a very quick and easy operation to link the two then.

quick fix...

With a similar setup I can't be arsed remembering names but I do remember IP addresses (not weird, I just use 10.100.100.1, .2, .3 etc). Just use the IP address in place of the server name, so \\10.100.100.23\sharename rather than \\laptop\sharename.

If you don't have hardwired IP addresses but use DHCP then the router may be offering DHCP addresses and I bet it is faster responding to DHCP requests than anything else you use.

Some routers also do weird things with DNS and WINS so the "Master Browser Elections" will break. Try entering IP address and names into the lmhosts file on each machine - \windows\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts on XP if my memory is correct.
