I had a faulty Neutral / Gear Indicator switch on my 2009 1200 GSA with an intermittent fault a real pain with it linked to the side stand and starting
I thought the switch would be really difficult to remove positioned where it is but with a short 1/4 af ring spanner its very easy to remove
I flushed the inside of the switch with WD40 electrical contact cleaner ( not the lubricating oil ) squirting it down past the seal in the middle and used an airline to blow it out
now it is working as it should a replacement switch from BMW is around £ 185

This Switch is actually a potentiometer. The wipers on the carbon track seem to be quite aggressive and there can be a build up of carbon in there.
Hence a wash out with contact cleaner can cure the problem.

I had mine with same issue, did that but didn't last long.. Replaced a few months later but wasn't that expensive at that time.

Mine now runs with the sidestand up or down providing the neutral light is glowing;; if ì'm not in gear and the stand is up the bike wont start until i juggle the lever up and down to get the neutral light on then it fire's straight away.

Im a newb to this world. My other world is orange and a ton lighter than Althea. (1997 R1100 GS) im having the same problem with the neutral light, and cant start her unless the light is green. It seems worse when she is hot. If I apply your fix, will it also just let me start her with the clutch in?
Is the center stand the only way to warm her up without getting on her and.putting the kickstand up? She's that big girl at the dance, not much in the parking lot, but when the music starts, girl has some.
I'm 6'4" and getting on her is balancing a mattress on a wine bottle...

Don't warm it up...I mean no more than 30sec to 1 minute.

If it's on the centre stand. Just climb onto it like it's a horse, nudge it off the stand and ride 👍🏻. It's not going to fall over on the centre stand, even when you climb onto it - I'm assuming it's on mostly level ground of course

New hips, shoulders and 3 fusions dont let me put her on the center stand. I was in tight quarters when I first got her, now we dont wrestle as much. But she's always keeping me aware...

Ah. Ok. See your position better. I guess I take it for grated putting into the centre stand (currently 🤞🏻).

Unsure of where you keep it. But if it's possible, one of those bike movers might need of used. I'm thinking of the kind that support the front wheel and keep it all upright. You just ride straight onto it. Just a thought!
