Never Camped, Need Advice.

Hi Phil,
Are you riding solo or two up?

John

Solo!

I've got the Vario panniers & I take the rear seat off so I've got a large area to stow stuff.

I keep the std rear rack on 'cos I also use a Givi box (mainly for light stuff like my spare gloves, snacks, video camera bag.
I've recently bought a tank bag so I need to re-draw up a new luggage distribution planner! :o

In my pre-camping days I used to use a tail-pack. Obviously this will have to go to make space for the tent/mat/sleeping bag.

So, rocks, what size bag would you recommend to lay across the panniers & rear seat area?
..& what would you put in it, just stuff I want keeping dry like my mat & sleeping bag or would you stuff it with your clothes too? That would free up some space in my panniers.

You say that the wet/damp tent should go into a smaller Ortleib bag then put in the large Ortleib bag? Well my Khyam Eiger tent will not pack any smaller which is why I bought the jumbo-sized Ortleib. It's a brilliant tent but for the fact it won't pack down small enough. And the jumbo Ortleib does obscure the view from the mirrors.

Another way to save a shedload of weight and space,is to wear the walking/hiking trail clothes that are easily bought, when not actually on your bike.

Not that you will need much clothing apart from your motorcycle gear, but www.craghoppers.com have a good sale on at the moment and their solardri and lightweight stuff is exceptional quality and packs down to a tiny space...easy to wash and maintain as well.

get a seperate waterproof bag that your tent will fit in,one for your sleeping bag and roll mat and put them in one big bag. store the rest of your gear in various sized smaller bags:thumb2 unless your really unlucky the wet stuff and dry stuff will never come in contact with each other.

..buy a book with camp sites and their star rating in

Anyone recommend a book?

Btw thanks AGAIN for all your advice.

I've bought..

A tent, a Gelert Tornado 3
A mat, a Vango Adventurer
& a water proof Roll Bag, a Hein Gericke 60 litre. I went with Hein Gericke 'cos I get a company discount! :augie

Italy here I come! :clap

Size matters..

Hi Phil, well your sorted for a bag, but I would have said..

In general terms.
35ltr - if you are solo and can pack neatly and not heading anywhere where you need lots of cold weather gear, ie fleeces etc..
49ltr- if you are solo or two up and can again pack well and dont need too much cold weather gear.
89ltr - if your two up and or solo with cold weather gear, or want more space for bringing shopping/momento's back.

As for packing.. I personally carry my tent and sleeping bag in my bag, and my cloths, food, cooking gear etc in my panniers. I know one school of thought says to ensure your tent and sleeping bag are inside your panniers, for security so you should your bag go missing, you have your shelter, but for myself I work on the theory that the items I want to unload first from my bike when I get to a campsite in bad weather, is my tent, then my bedding and then, change of cloths, then food etc. I always pack a torch where its easy to get hold of too, as arriving in the dark in the uk is a occupational hazard..

Paul, Stubbs comment is about right, if your tent takes up the major space in the bag, then put the stuff you want to keep dry in a dry bag.

Oh for those who havent seen em yet, exped are presently doing square profiled dry bags with air valves in them, so you can compress them;
See Here and See Here
Great fit for TT and BMW panniers. Also makes packing a hell of a lot easier.. stuff your compressable cloths in with open valve, close bag, kneel on or compress bag, close valve, adjust roll closure if you wish and whalla.

Exped also do some roll tops with clear sight panels in the sides so you can actually easily see the the contents. Usefull if your not a greatly organised packer like myself and don't want to have to haul gear out to find a specific bit of clothing etc.

Phil, with the roll bag you have gone for, can probably pop your tent in it and some clothing (rec a seperate lightweight bag), tent last mind. Though anyone who puts a tent in a bag, seriously recommend you always roll your tent poles into the middle of your tent when packing it up, and not put them in last, as when you strap the bag down, its easy to be a bit heavy handed and wind up with bent poles.

A lot of good advice/tips already posted.

Go light and compact. It costs a little more but you'll be gald you spent a little more to save space/weight.

+1 on the Pezl headlamp...a must.

I took a 2-up trip for 3 months in 2006. We camped 25 out of 90 nights.
I have a fairly detailed list on my site www.motorcycle-overland.com .

A couple good resources for more info:
www.bmwmoa.org (entire section on camping)
www.micapeak.com (camping check lists that you can modify and print)

Enjoy....you'll have a bast!
