Despite having three days to pack for this trip, I didn't really get organised until the last minute. Then I started running into little niggles - which became bigger as my departure time approached.

Firstly, I couldn't find the 'bra' that fits on my fuel tank so that I can zip my tank bag to it. In a complete mind-fuck, I did find an almost identical one that Mike Belch gave me a couple of weeks ago. I tried fitting it to the bike - something I have done a hundred times - and couldn't work out how it fitted. I even called Jorge - my Adventure Butler - who sent me the pictures of his bike, which confirmed I had the wrong part.

No problem - it'll be in the house somewhere. Problem is, the house has had rather a lot of upheaval since I last used it - plus I have a new cleaning lady who efficiently tidies stuff up. I turned the house upside down yesterday and couldn't find it.

I manage to do a bodge job on the one Mike gave me - the proper one will no doubt turn up when I'm looking for something else.

I then manage to spend at least two hours adjusting the dipped headlamp on the Adv for continental use. This should be a five minute job - but I ended up with most of the front end of the bike hanging off before I got it done...

I've been looking at the continental weather forecast for the last few days and on Sunday decided to book an hotel in Dijon, as all forecasts seem to give me a clear run from home to there - no forecast rain anywhere on route.

Can you hear a bell tolling?

New kit to try out! I have a new Arai XD4 crash helmet. I try this on early in the day, because my last one needed some severe surgery in the cheek pads, and I wanted timne to do this if necessary. To my mild surprise it fits fine - either I've lost weight or they've redesigned the cheekpads.

I think they've redesigned the cheekpads...

Late in the evening, once all my packing is complete, I try my new Daytona boots on for the first time. Can't get them zipped up :bluduh I have a high instep and the redesign of the boot with a short zip on the inside edge means I can't get them to fit. Luckily I have a pair of Sidi something or others, which fit OK.

I am eventually finished at about 21:30 and have a shower before turning in - I have set the alarm for 05:15 as a backstop, as I must be on the road for 06:00, and turn the light out - I'm knackered...

House isn't half quiet without my dog Marnie in it (took her to kennels yesterday morning).

Can't sleep. I try all the usual tricks, but just can't drop off. Eventually, at 02:30, I say "Bollocks to it" and switch the light back on.

I have another shower and get kitted up - walk outside - there's a soft drizzle falling - almost a mist...

I get the bike out of the garage...

...park the car on the driveway, finish getting kitted up, lock the house up and set off at about 03:10.

I've not bothered putting waterprooofs on - it's such a light rain that it just dampens the front of my gloves and mists my visor - that makes it unpleasant, as it also mists my glasses - hey-ho...

I'm soon on the A11 keeping up a good speed - just heavies on the road this early. I make it all the way to the Eurotunnel at Folkestone without putting a foot on the ground. I'm very early - I'm actually booked on the 09:50 train, but the automatic check in says I can go on the 06:20 for an extra £1. I insert my card and the transaction is completed. Really? One pound? It HAS to cost them more than that to administer the scheme, surely. Why not make it £3 or free?

I'm soon in the line of motorists queuing for the train...

...having the breakfast of champions...

i-6CLZ9Fv-L.jpg

We are quickly called forward and I am right at the front of the train - there are about three cars ahead of me...

i-8Kzd2GK-L.jpg

We set off on the dot and arrive in Calais 35 minutes later - as advertised. I stop for some fuel, then start burning the miles (or, more accurately, kilometres) towards Dijon...

i-zvcmt7q-L.jpg

Hmm - so much for the forecast clear skies...

i-BTGx2bX-L.jpg

I don't think the rain has finished with me yet.

Sure enough, I pass through a short, cold shower, after which the day is dry...

Time for some breakfast, I think...

Le Spotted Dick... :D

i-P8s3Mrp-L.jpg

French service stations take the sterile unpleasantness which one associates with this kind of place to a new level - I couldn't wait to get out of there...

i-kk6GpfD-L.jpg

The sun! Huzzah!

At my next fuel stop I swap the clear visor on my helmet for the tinted one...

i-jrDhK5g-L.jpg

...giving me an "anonymous world traveller" look - rather than the "ageing hamster who got it's head stuck in a Kinder egg" look I was achieving with the clear one...

I press on at a steady 140kph, pay a total of €28 in tolls (bargain) and arrive at the B&B at Dijon at about 14:00.

It seems my anonymous man of mystery look has got some traction...

i-pMtMgwZ-L.jpg

I unpack the bike into my small, but perfectly formed, room - the internnet speed is amazing! It only downloads at about 28Mbps, but uploads at 69 - my pictures take less than a minute to upload...

I'm absolutely knackered - where to tomorrow?

Bike's looking sweet as usual Mike - braless rather suits you IMHO :D

Safe trip :thumb2

edit: just realised there's still a bra, but you've changed your style - who makes that one btw?

It's a Touratech VP45 system - but the 'bra' I've adapted (by tying the front straps to the spotlamp mounts :D) is designed for use with a 650GS. If I can't find the original, I'll get new straps sewn on to this one...

Thought it looked a bit small, watch you don't have a wardrobe malfunction there :D :beerjug:

Just in case you do end up wanting to undertake some surgery to the cheek pads in that nice new Tour-X, Arai have made it easier with the 4. Both the cheek pads and the skull cap now have two layers of foam, a thick base layer and a thinner top layer which you can removed by peeling it off and maybe a wee bit of cutting where the layers are stuck together.

From the outside the 'new' Arai looks the same as the 'old' Arai:confused:

Anyway, another subscriber.

9th September 2015

After finishing yesterday's journal, I lay on the bed - to wake at aout 02:00 somewhat disorientated... :D

I eventually surface at about 08:00 and, after a shower feel vaguely human. I pack the bike and get kitted up. I notice that the oil level is a little low - not with any surprise - both my 1150s have the habit of using oil when on a long motorway trip.

I've not booked the €6.50 breakfast here, as there's a MacDonalds just across the road...

i-djBr8hV-L.jpg

...which furnishes me with a McMorning Brunch (God help me) for just over €5.

The restaurant is spotlessly clean, but they must make their money at some other time of day, because it was not at all busy...

The lovely (but camera-shy) Yvette kindly provides me with ice for my CamelBak

Onward!

i-C5XzHpp-L.jpg

I have tasked Bettie with coming up with an interesting 'Winding Roads' route to Annecy. She's straight on the job, steering me through the small suburbs that most towns have as they taper towards the countryside...

i-CPDRZCK-L.jpg

It's a glorious day - not a cloud in the sky and already about 65 deg F...

i-Xrn2xQ6-L.jpg

Bettie steers me down a succession of small D (Departmental) roads, heading generally south...

The balls on the power lines here are to help wildfowl avoid them, apparently...

i-3N4WzLt-L.jpg

The weather's great, the bike is on song and there's no hurry to get anywhere...

i-hqNHhwp-L.jpg

Haven't had a bridge pic for a while...

The nice thing about having no schedule to keep is that you can just stop anytime you like - and take a minute to smell the roses...

i-57GvfjJ-L.jpg

Anybody able to identify this old lady, rusting away in a farmyard? Should be easy for my European readers, maybe less so for the US contingent...

i-VP6vzwm-L.jpg

Fields and fields of dry corn line the roads...

i-gm7JZBN-L.jpg

I start climbing and the view opens up to my right...

i-bFKCkqs-L.jpg

Hardly another soul about - I see the occasional farmer on a tractor, but otherwise the road is mine...

i-qmCG4df-L.jpg

Firewood.

Firewood is everywhere - packed into open barns, alongside houses and even...

i-fF9KzWz-L.jpg

...at the roadside.

Something odd happens to people when they buy a wood-burning stove - they start developing a facial tic if they have less than a three year supply of logs stored. I've been regaled with stories of how individuals have had lucky finds - and spent the whole weekend with a chainsaw and a trailer clearing a downed tree...

Anyway.

Another example of things the French do really well. This is a scenic overlook - so they put benches and picnic tables up in the shade of specially planted trees so that people can enjoy it...

Gigantic doorstep sized ham and cheese toastie cooked in the pizza oven...

Followed by a rather bland looking, but spectacularly tasty, homemade pistachio ice cream...

i-7Fhwg2D-L.jpg

Two and a half hours to go, according to Bettie - sounds eminently doable...

i-mwGPj7b-L.jpg

Getting a tad warm...

i-6TxvKPw-L.jpg

Bettie comes up with some more spectacular roads to keep me from a post-prandial torpor...

i-cWs343h-L.jpg

...and there's no doubt we are approaching the Alps...

i-wVCqCbs-L.jpg

But then...

i-7BV6QMM-L.jpg

Bolleaux - still, let's have a look and see if there's an alternative...

i-9vcCTM7-L.jpg

Seems not.

Now this is where TomTom have got Garmin beaten hands-down. All I do is press the 'avoid roadblock' symbol and I'm shown an alternative route within a couple of seconds - try that on your Garmin (I used to be a dyed in the wool Garmin user - does it show? :D).

i-9pKQ4St-L.jpg

As is often the case, the interruptions turn out to be the journey - the alternative route follows the lake for miles - it's beautiful...

i-DwLjgNn-L.jpg

We're soon back on track...

i-BqRCPBj-L.jpg

I stop for a few minutes to watch this shire horse being trained on a lunge line...

i-JmtLRmZ-L.jpg

I think that's what it's called anyway...

i-bDB52CX-L.jpg

It just occurred to me that we haven't had a barn picture yet - where are my manners?

i-GcGtvKp-L.jpg

It is a beautiful day...

i-hDzP5qP-L.jpg

Bettie steers me up another col - the air is thick with the smell of pine resin...

i-GrzXZ8Z-L.jpg

...as we clear the woodland, she takes me on a right turn down a tiny road...

...which eventually leads me here...

i-rj392M4-L.jpg

I cross this splendid suspension bridge at Seyssel...

i-BBrg3cT-L.jpg

...where I also refuel and top the oil up. I've been to this garage before - the owner has some serious racing bikes...

i-KPDZ3ft-L.jpg

I climb up the last col and stop for a minute to enjoy the view...

i-dp3hk33-L.jpg

...then start the descent towards Annecy...

i-jvXDXGf-L.jpg

I arrive at the outskirts at rush-hour...

i-FJGHb68-L.jpg

Looked lovely, sounded great - stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic like every Renault and Peugot...

i-DHJksjL-L.jpg

I arrive at the B&B Annecy at about 17:30 - the shower feels good...

Renault 4, with three on the tree instead of four on the floor?

Couldn't get close enough to see if it had an umbrella handkle gearstick - didn't they all have them, come to think of it?

The 4 van which I drove certainly did. However, it was a 4 speed rather than 3. 1st was left and back, 2nd push forward, 3rd pull back, 4th right and forward.

So look forward to your trips Mike.
Perfic. .. :thumb2

I arrive at the outskirts at rush-hour...

It's ALWAYS rush hour in Annecy...

Enjoying your report :)

Haven’t ridden in France for years, you’re reminding me I should fix that.
