Finally had a chance to try the new 1300 ADV and wanted to share my thoughts...Also compared to the regular 1300 GS with ADV (sports) suspension.OK if you have to buy a new bike I would get the 1300GS ADV or regular GS over either Afrika Twin , Ready to race into bankruptcy 1290/1390 KTM or quieter than a espresso machine V4 Multistrada...But if you have a 1250 the differences/advancements are not big enough IMHO to upgrade which is kind of disappointing considering the old 1200/1250 is by now a 12 year old platform ! Or a sign of accomplishment how far ahead BMW was back in 2012 when the new 1200GS-LC came out and still is a total modern up to date bike 12 years later today in 2025 !
Good the 1300GS is faster in gears 1-2-3 than the 1250 but the taller gears 4-5-6 feel nothing faster due to the taller gearing which is kind of disappointing.Weight is about the same when bikes are specced the same minus the smaller tank , lighter battery and lighter forged wheels which are great ! According to MOTORRAD 0-125 10,9 vs 12,5 (EU 4) , 13,4 (EU5) 1250GS. Weight was 253 kilos for the 1300GS , 6 kilos lighter than the 1250GS but if it wasnt for the smaller tank, lithium battery and forged wheels weight would have been the same.
The 1300ADV came in at 282 kilos wet exactly the same as the 1250ADV...Acceleration 0-125mph was 13 seconds for the new 1300 vs 12,6 for the EU4 1250 ADV...
No progress here as I wont say anything about looks but sitting on it the new one feels more modern / sportier like a oversized superbike with the wide tank and shorter reach to the lower handlebar which felt good !
But for me to spend $$$ for a new GS BMW has to pull out the stops....165 hp/NM out of 1400 cc with longer stroke would be perfect ! Also a 24 liter tank option for the regular GS as the ADV is a elephant...(Too) BIG and 30 kilos heavier...LInked brakes like on the 1250 are great but to link the foot brake to the front like on the 1300 is stupid ! Also more sound from the exhaust would be highly appreciated as also a real tail-light instead of the confusing blinkers...A XR version with 17 inch wheels , lower handlebar and under seat exhaust would be the icing on the cake ! As also a S-portboxer as versatile and fun for road & track as the R1100S was in its days to replace the R and RS models and Please with Telelever would be stuff dreams are made of too as nobody offers a good looking , more versatile and less radical sport bike for the street and occasional track day anymore.Especially one with character as the superbikes have become pretty much all the same and way too extreme for road riding except for the M1000XR that unfortunately has no options for hard bags/centerstand to make it suitable for longer trips...The future will tell as there are very few bikes left worth buying or getting your juices flowing...So far my next BMW will be a M2 which is a very fun and still affordable and totally practical sportscar still available with a 6-spd manual...I am waiting for the 2-wheel equivalent ! With Telelever-Boxer-Driveshaft of course.
Happy new Year !
