I've been looking for a BMW project for a while, I thought I needed a R65 to make into a GS tourer but reading here and there I believe that it was better option to buy a GS to rebuild / convert, so that's what I did, ebay photo below more to follow.
Its done 78000 miles.
I'm not going to spend mega bucks, I love patina (read I'm a bit tight) and funds aren't brill (read I got some that I don't want to part with), but if I got to buy it I will.
I need advice, thoughts and options on the following;
Its got an XR650 front end which I'm thinking of removing to return to standard, I have all the BM parts apart from calliper, though they could be worn and one fork on quick inspection has a pit or two. I'm very tempted to leave as is and sort out cables, speedo and warning lights, I have read of electronic speedo / warning light kits, an option I guess. Anyone else have a XR650 front end?
I'm going for a single seat and rack option, UFO mudguard???? Cut down my own seat and get recovered, advice for sub frame location (ebay) appreciated.
Short stocky exhaust.
The rest I guess is cosmetics, unless I missed something which is quite easy as I haven't as yet really thought about it or looked at what I really have.
Days to come will raise more questions, I'll post progress on the, well I'm not sure what, a rebuild or a fix er upper, frame looks clean so I'm not quite sure if its a strip down, sandblast / powder coat. Engine runs nice and quiet so is there a need to inspect / replace parts, starting motor is way louder. Once I start I feel a money pit is sure to follow.
Whatever I do I can't wait for spring to get it on the road to rallies, alps and more.
