New battery time

The RS failed me this morning.

Thought I'd take it for a run as it's been standing a while.

Bugger didn't want to turn over, ended up jump it off the mini battery.

Charging appears to be normal and the battery's been kept on trickle charges at all times.

Bike turned over as normal after a short run, however the Bosch starter isn't the best.

Might consider a Nippon Denso plus new battery.

Get an oddesey, best move I made and modified battery box and made room for compressor.

I have a hawker Gel battery and I love to get hold of a smaller bat holder so I could mount the bat sideways to make room for stuff under the seat. Anyone know a company that makes them?

i be looking at getting a new odyssee as the one i have got has given up in the cold as the bike is left out side..
plus had to make some packers to keep the smaller battery in normal bigger carrier

Keep the same battery holder and buy a plastic ( those quality flexi-clear type ) butty box that will fill the gap between the battery and the holder...then you'll have more storage for the little used parts you may wish to carry ( Electricians tape/spade ends/fuses/condoms/spare HT and plug cap/ 2 spark plugs etc)

The attached picture is battery set up I have on GSPD, slightly modified original battery holder (could still fit standard battery if I removed compressor and housing I made for it).

The housing for the compressor is made from 2mm alloy, bent into U shape, the blue bungies are for the compressor and battery. The picture shows them just on battery (these are crimped together so they cannot fall off)

My give you some idea's?

I went to my local battery dealer to see about a new Odyssey PC310 for the 650. £120 they wanted.
I'll give it another few days on the Optimate to see if it recovers...

Not the cheapest battery ... but the best. If you're keeping the bike invest in an Odyssey, because that's what it is ... an investment

We tried condoms, but to be honest we found trying to keep five of them on your fingers was a pain in the ass. We use those mechanics disposable gloves instead now.

I read somewhare over on the 1200 section that people where only getting about two years from batteries that where being kept on an Optimate type trickle charger. Others who did not using a trickle charger or only used it ocasionaly for a couple of days where getting well over two years from the same batteries. I use the occasional method with my optimate and my standerd 1200 battery is still good after four years now. I think too much time on the trickle charger actually reduces the long term life of the batteries.

As for battery choise I replaced Jills 100 battery with a fiberglass Sheet type. Very similar to the Odessey and the same sort as the OE 1200 battery. It is the same size as the Odessey, so needs packing out. Is fully sealed, so no leaks and is half the price nearly at about £55.00ish.

My R80 sidecar has an Odessey fitted and it works well. Don't know how old it is. Only that it's never been kept on a charger and it still does what it's meant to. When it fails I'll probably replace it with the cheeper option as fitted to Jills bike. Don't see the point in spending money where it's not needed.

Another thing to think of is the charging regulator. I noticed yesturday, that the sidecar has the Police type hi out put reg fitted. I'm sure Jills does too as she never suffers any charging problems. This might be a consideration worth exploring. Getting a propper charge in to the battery when pottering round town.

Val - no, I don't keep the Optimate connected when the bikes not in use, I just charge it up when I think it needs doing. Trouble is I haven't used the 650 for 12 months and although I have charged it a few times in that period, I haven't been checking it that often and have now managed to let the battery get totally drained.
I tried charging it a couple of weeks ago but it didn't charge up very well. But at £120 for a replacement I think it's worth persevering a bit longer...
