new battery

Hi. I thought the original (Exide) gel battery on my 2003 worked and lasted well, so I'd say go with OEM if you can get one at a reasonable price. I couldn't (NZ, and the mail-order people won't send batteries half way round the world) so a Motobatt seemed like a reasonable price/performance option; it's been fine for a year, but ask me again in another five.

I bought my GSA in 2008 with an odysee battery fitted, its been as good as gold, pulled the bike out on sunday for the first time since October and it fired straight up, (no optimate fitted) though I've also got a £30.00 BMF cheapy on my tls that hasn't let me down since I fitted it, would recommend either route.

I used an Exide when I replaced the battery on my 1200GS. The OE battery is made by Exide.

Many people on here use Motobatt as they are pretty much the same as an odyssey, but much cheaper. They even have extra terminals for bolting your accessories to.

I paid £26 IIRC trade price for my Exide. BMW wanted £119 for an OE battery :eek :eek

I have an Oddessy bought lightly used from a GSer member. The engine never fails to start and turns over a little more smartly than the old Excide but its not a dramatic difference. I found it easier to fit the other way around. The heavy leads were easy enough to re-route.

Dont buy from sparesunlimited online. They sent me a returned and faulty battery. Left me stranded and they were not interested in helping at all. Battery looked like new but on close inspection it had a dent near terminal where previous bod tried to get it fitted.

Oem battery spec is nothing special. Similar batteries on ebay are much cheaper. Or spend the same on a glass mat battery that's better able to handle the stress of starting a big twin

I always use OEM parts - too often when I was younger I used pattern parts on vehicles only to find that they never quite fit or they have an effect on something else. By using OEM I feel that I have removed any doubts.

The OEM battery on my new bike - a week old regularly created LAMPF errors on hot restarts after fuelling etc. as it wouldnt fire up the HiD headlamp, although the aux. lamps would start. Fitted a Motobatt. No problem. 4 years later? No problem.
Was the OEM battery fitted to my bike faulty? No.

Two nearly 600cc pistons take some moving.

Is there any car that has a battery this small? Even the small Fat battery is about double the volume of the R1200GS battery but only has to handle 300cc pistons.

I'm not dissing the bike just pointing out that basic spec batteries will be only just good enough when new. The standard Excide is ok but nothing special.

OEM battery is glass matt as is the mottobat .

Why spend double for a battery with a BMW logo on it when the Exide battery is the exact same battery but without the logo.

There are a lot better batteries out there than the OEM and the size is a standard size so other manufacturers should fit exactly the same. But it's your choice and if your happy with stock then stick with it. It's not a bad battery but it's not the best either.
