Very interesting I think we may have to refer to you as Dr Warlord from now on. I, like others am always surprised how people treat a 14k + bike like shit and moan when it starts to deteriorate. I accept that some go even when cherished but that is not the norm. I accept these are 'rusty tufty' bikes for toying the galaxy (which they still will with a bit of corrosion) but they still need to be looked after.

Agreed.

Dr Warlord makes me sound like I need a phone box to travel through time. Hmmm, nice idea.

Warlord - are you obsessed?

PS your black wheel rims are a disgrace, clean them

Think you just answered your own question. :D

EDIT: Hey, I agreed to this challenge and I'm upholding my side of the deal. I'll let you know when my bike rusts to bits, but so far there is nothing wrong with it... :beerjug:

Polished out the scratches on the rear swingarm and cut out some 4D Carbon Vinyl I have lying around.

Its a cheap fix, but it'll stop the paint getting scratched off and is quite robust. Just reapply some more vinyl every 6 months or so.

Waterproof and just peal it off before you sell it.

Thanks Dr. Warlord :) that is a well-maintained bike indeed and thank you for posting the pics.

Whats tedious?

Explain yourself?

This thread and challenge

Come back when you've got 60k on it.....................not just 4k and 3 months summer usage and let's see if it's rusted to fuck

Engineer's bike would be one to look at

That's the problem, they put the swingarm on the wrong side:blast

Earlier 1200 bikes have the swingarm on the correct side, opposite where you operate the centre stand:P

I understand what you are saying, but you are completely wrong.

Thats why I'm doing this thread.

My mates bike above is 6 months old and not even got to 3000 miles and its starting to rot.

This means its how the bike is maintained from new.

I will come back with 60,000 miles on it and it'll still look great hopefully.

But in the meantime its ironic how it appears those who complain the most about rust are the same people who don't lift a finger to prevent it.

I'm doing this thread hopefully for people to think about how they look after their £17,000 bike before they start shitting on BMW doorstep.

The message is, if you look after your bike, it'll look after you.

It could all turn to shit in 6 months if you don't care about it, and thats a big shame on you.

Almost every week there's a post on a car bmw forum, that I'm a member of, moaning about hub corrosion. Some examples after a year look pretty bad. Several posters, including myself, have pointed out that if you seal and regularly wash the hubs, you'll get no corrosion, even after a number of years. The advice seems to fall on deaf ears (too busy bitching about BMW).

I've posted about my mates bike and mine because they are identical and used in same environment. So it eliminates variables.

It isn't BMW paint, or other quality issues or mine would be in the same condition already.

I'll keep you updated on mine as we head through summer, autumn and winter with the problems I face and what I do to remedy them.

Yes indeed.

It could be typical BMW demographic.

Some people to happy bitching and moaning but won't do anything themselves like its beneath them.

But I object to these type putting off good folk who can enjoy their new bike.

All my bikes get looked after very well they are kept clean as much as is possible and sprayed with GT85 or anything similar after each wash. I have had X 4 GS and GSA along with many other makes over the years, none have suffered corrosion issues the last GSA had done two winters and covered 25000 miles and was in mint condition.
I'm with you look after your bike and it will look after you. Here's mine just before I sold it, with 25,000 miles on it now waiting for the new one
