New bike pics and thoughts

£1050 for Vario topbox and panniers, that's both eye and mouthwatering:eek:

So the TE is £13815, plus £1050 for full luggage, £600 for BMW Nav4 = £15465:eek:

About the same price as another BMW product - Mini Clubman One D is about £15500, with a 3 year warranty

http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/mini/mini-clubman-one-d.asp

Makes one think, just a bit

Just sayin'

Basic bike with comfort pack less than £12k - I think it's fairly priced. Touratech do a large waterproof roll bag for £100 - enough for a week in the Alps :D

I know what I'd rather have though :D

In reality, I'm not so sure?

You walk in to a BMW showroom - Mini, Cars and Motorrad with a cheque for c.£15500

For your £15500 you get either a Mini One Countryman D, which you can use in comfort all year round for all the family

The Mini has a combined mpg of 72mpg, cheaper (maybe free service package) servicing, 3 year warranty etc

Or

a 2013 BMW 12 GS LC, which you have to add ACF50 to, in order to stop it corroding in winter, have it serviced every 6k, replace tyres every 5k, add aftermarket accessories to stop yourself getting filthy, a comfy seat and maybe screen to improve the ride ability and a shed load of tat and only has a 2 year warranty

Given the choice, I'd take the new Mini car and save up/buy a £2-£3k 11/1150GS

You've already got 2 1150's, so are you getting a Mini?:P

I'm not saying it wasn't, compared to other new bikes and I take your point

I'm just saying what is available for £15500 from the BMW Group product range

I never understand why people compare bike and car prices - anything that is mass produced (cars) will always have the benefit of massive economies of scale that will enable prices to be kept down.

No matter how good the old 1150 was in it's time, technology has moved on and new GS is head and shoulders above the old bike in design, performance and technology, in real terms it is also probably cheaper than the 1150 it it's day.

You could apply that to anything though:comfort There are more expensive bikes available out there. One day a GS will cost £20000:rob

The bike is priced at £15000+ because people will pay that much for them.

The bike is much less than that. You can add extras to take it way beyond £15k, but that has been the case for years.:rob

Ah, but you're missing the point

£15500 buys you either a 12GS LC TE Edition with luggage & Sat Nav or a Mini Clubman One diesel from the same company

On a VFM basis, how can the bike be worth it - irrespective of whether you can afford it or not

Doesn't matter if it was £10k or £50k for a new GS, i'm looking at what £15500 will give you from a manufacturer called BMW

Understood, and you are right.:thumb But this isn't new, as you could always spend that or even more on a GSA with luggage and nav.:nenau

New bikes are an expensive hobby, always have been, always will be.:rob

The new GS is mass produced and has economies of scale and price, just like a car

The 1150 may be old, but if we toured together, both bikes would complete the journey at the same time, go to the same places and see the same things

Yours maybe a bit quicker, lighter & more fuel efficient, but with similar traffic and road quality, no doubt we'd travel within 5mph of each other over a 300 mile journey

In reality ...............there would be little difference:bounce1

I agree, the bike will always be more fun to own - that's why we love them and on the other hand the car will be more practical and better value per mile than any bike

I just can't get my head around why now there is so much technology added to make them so bloody expensive

Your making sense to me JB, I just hope I can resist the temptation to change though:D

Yep the pricing is crazy but it's all relative and I wouldnt compare a high spec GS with a cheap ish BMW car. My mate just spent 6k on a KTM dirt bike he'll use 6 times this year. I recently spent £5k on a pair of second hand loudspeakers - I could have spent £60 on a pair that would have played the same tunes.

Premium pricing for a pemium product ?

Having said that no way I'd spend £15k on a new GS. The depreciation is the real killer.

Sounds like you're off to the mini clubman forum where, I'm sure you will be welcome with open arms.

They only have one thread and its all about what they put in their flasks - warm lemon or soup!!!:thumb

The Mini One Clubman wasn't a low spec car though:blast

It had ABS and traction control, aircon, heated window, windscreen wipers, sat nav, good lights, DRL's, comfy seats, decent screen,CD -Radio, rad protection and a 12 year rust guarantee, plus an extra years warranty over a new GS

All the things the new TE spec GS has, plus I added in full luggage and a sat nav to make a like for like comparison, of 2 BMW vehicles form their product range of what £15500 would buy you, if you slapped the cheque down on the table today, at a BMW dealer

I was comparing £15500 worth of metal from BMW's product range - one has 4 wheels and the other has 2 wheels, that's all

Bikes are way overpriced, new and secondhand:eek:

In reality there is a massive difference in the experience between riding my LC and riding my 2010 twin-cam - this new bike is light years ahead of the 1150 - it isn't just about practicalities it is about fun too and the new bike has this in spades and this is why it is worth the money.

Bike prices have gone up massively the last few years - I paid £7.5k OTR for a new GS in 2006 (non ABS) and £10.5k in 2010 for one with ABS. The same bike is now £12.8k in 2013.
