When mine was new I got hold of a roll of black and a roll of silver gaffer tape.

I put the appropriate colours on the fork legs to help stop stone chips, and some on the shaft housing to stop my foot wearing the paint off.

I also wish I'd took the panniers to a vehicle vinyl place and got them covered, especially the lids.

The duct tape idea sounds good thanks, but i don't really have time to make a guard so i'l just buy one when i'm in the states in a couple of weeks.
