New Brittany Ferries Spain boats.

But would you want to sit on a seat for 36 hours ? Great start to a holiday !

No, not a chance. I was just highlighting that you don't get the option. We found it quite relaxing and the craic was good. The early morning arrival gets you on the road pronto. I'd do it again as long as the price doesn't rocket, although I'd be very reluctant to ride down there. As you say, it's a holiday, not an endurance test.

When we went this year it was £35 per person, per trip to access the Club Lounge if you didn't book a Club cabin when it comes included, and seemd a good option. For next year though it looks to have jumped to £85 per person, per trip.

With regards to the 2 night crossing, I found it better than previous Pont Aven crossings. It looks a longer crossing but in reality you're on the boat for one full day, which for us worked better than two half days. We had loads of time for a relaxed ride down to Portsmouth and something to eat before boarding and rolled off ready to ride in Spain first thing in the morning with a full day ahead.
Club cabin & Lounge for me, then no need to buy any food or drink (including alcohol) pity the price has gone up, but still think the extra £££ is worth it if your on board for 2 nights.

A question: is it foolhardy to not book a return and just turn up at either santander or bilbao in say may.?

Yes, very foolhardy. What’s plan B if they don’t have a space for you ?
its not as if there’s a lot of other ferries down there.

Yes. The ferries have finite capacity for bikes based on the number of tie downs, even if not full of cars. You would be advised to check a few days before your intended return to see if there is capacity and have a plan B as already mentioned to ride up through France.

Other factors: perhaps no cabins available; high price just like rocking up to the Channel Tunnel or an airport without a ticket; it's not like Dover for frequency of sailings

Get a flexy ticket and you can change your booking at short notice, but don't just turn up and expect to get on.

flexi is fine for altering the outbound crossing but I believe, once you have sailed to Spain, you are locked into the return date, unless you pay a fee

The answer to that is to book separate outward and return journeys! :)

Anyone notice that the Friday outward bound Santander ferry is now on the Thursday?

No! That’s a massive pain as it means another day off work. Catching it Friday night was better.

it's only for the winter timetable when they have Tues & Thurs sailings to Santander and nothing to Bilbao or from Plymouth

https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/map/timetables-pdf?country=ESP shows that by April, they have a Thursday and a Friday departure from Portsmouth to Santander. Thurs is a 1900 departure, Fri 2330.

Tues 2330 & Sun 2145 to Bilbao

Plymouth to Santander resumes on 20 March with sailings on Wed 1545 & Sun 1745. The latter is my preferred route & time and the hour later departure is helpful now I have moved 2 hours further north! Ride down to Plymouth Sunday AM before the traffic madness starts as the DFL go back home.

Ah I see. Looks like we’ve inadvertently added an extra day to our May trip

That’s a shame……not!

I use the ferry now as can no longer ship the bikes to Barcelona and fly. Plymouth to San is my preference as its only 22 hrs rather than the 2 days . Riding down thro france and back is not an option as tyres would not last , plus its a lot of M ways which I hate. Its bad enough the Worcester to Plymouth but no choice but get me to the Piano Bar .....

On the Friday Portsmouth to Santander crossings what sort of time are you out of the port & on the road ?

I'm hoping for 9am on the Sunday morning ;)

It been 9 for the last couple of times I’ve done it.

Whilst the new boats have some elements of better like TV in the cabins the food is no where near as good, the bar area is nowhere near as good and if you go from Portsmouth 2 nights out is a piss take

It depends on your sailing day. If I use the Sunday afternoon Plymouth ferry I have to leave Yorkshire on Saturday and stop overnight somewhere like Glastonbury before heading down to the ferry port on Sunday morning. I take a scenic route and make this part of my holiday.

If I catch the Saturday night ferry from Portsmouth I can still take a scenic route to get there, but I'm off the boat earlier on Monday morning, so can get much further south into Spain or east into the Pyrenees.

I do the scenic route ( as much as possible) from Yorkshire to Plymouth through the cotswolds etc and find there is plenty of time to get there for the 3pm Sunday sailing

It is of course all down to how you plan and like your trip
the Plymouth boat gets into Santander in plenty of time for me to get to where I want to be - Potes - for the first night

Rick, You must be on the road early, but for the Sunday afternoon crossing there’s no need to set off early on Sunday morning other than to save an overnight on the way down or if you work on a Saturday
