My chain is on the way out so I need to replace it. I'll do the rear sprocket at the same time - front brand new. Any recommendations for good hardworking kit? Bike only gets used (and abused) on the trails.

Clutch cables - cheapo off Ebay worth bothering with? If not, what do suggest?

Rimlocks - been advised to fit some. Does it matter which brand? All much of a muchness?

Cables - I'd always buy OEM from Suzuki

Better watch how you type,Once you stick it on here for sale it'l read
-Bike only gets used for light green laning, very carefully ridden by a member of this parish.:thumb

:thumb What bike doesn't get abused on the trails?! Anyway, this one's a keeper so it won't be going up for sale.

Throughout my years as an apprentice I was always told never to fit a new chain on old sprockets. They may only be slightly worn but will accelerate chain wear considerably, appears you are saving £5 on a frt sprocket to waste £60 on a new chain

IMHO :thumb

Alledgedly:comfort

Front sprocket only done 2 days riding, but take your point - for the sake of a tenner more.

Come on then chaps, what brand of chain would you recommend?

Ring Neil Riddle at Demon Tweeks.
He sells Afam sprockets in steel. Also Tsubaki o-ring chain.
I run 14/47, so using 112 links. Ensure you ask for a split link and spare, as they are additional to the chain pack.
DTs should also have rimlocks, 1.6 front and 2.15 rear iirc, please check on your bike though.
Cables, it has to be OEM..... The rest are shite.

Cheers Timpo - I'll call him tomorrow. How did the ride go today?
Another DRZ question - the front sprocket cover on the DRZ holds in all the mud and crud. Ditch it? Or cut a hole in the middle so the crap can escape?

Don't cut a hole in it unless you have a spare - you'll need it for the MOT.

Just take it off when riding off road. :beerjug:

Thanks Beer Hunter.

What about gearing? I'm running 14/44. Timpo mentioned 14/47. Is that a recommended combo for offroad?

I'd never doubt anything Timpo says :beerjug:

He's obviously never said to you "Let's just do a few lanes" like he did to me last Wednesday.

81/2 hrs later, after we'd covered all the hardest lanes in Powys, all fallen off a few times and arrived back at the van totally wrecked:D

Amen......
But I bet you're back next week for another ride...... Thursday innit?;)

OK, back to the OP...... 14/47 is 'E' gearing, so revving somewhat uncomfortably for my ear at 55mph, but perfect for me on the welsh stuff I ride (as average speed for a day is 20mph). Depending on where and what type of trails you have, this 14/47 combo may be too low.

So what do you reckon Timpo? 14/44?

What is the 'S' standard gearing, then go down one on the front. You shouldn't need to shorten the chain. But, again as I mentioned, the bike would struggle on steeper trails, as wanting to spin the wheel rather pull away at low revs.
I'm riding trick stuff most of the time, so not needing a trail bike with 70mph capability, 50mph on a welsh 'A' road is ample for me if I had to revert to main roads.
I have got some odd sprocket sizes here I could mail up to you to try, none are new but all have life so you could fit and try......

As for the rimlock sizes, take a look around the inner part of your rims, adjacent to where the spoke nuts join the spokes, and somewehere there will be stamped the sizes of the rims, they should be 1.6x21 and 2.15x18 if i remember correctly.

15/44 is standard gearing in the S. I recently replaced the front with a 14, did the SS spacer etc at the same time. It has made a difference - easier riding in 2nd at low speed - but as I'm going to replace the rear sprocket and chain I wondered if it was worth going for a different rear. I might just stick with 14/44 for now - I'm not riding the kind of trails you are!

I run 14/47 also, but if i'm doing a longer trip with some road work i stick a 15 on the front it makes it a bit easier on the road.

That's right, and no need to alter chain length. :thumb2
With a 15t on the front, I believe some folk could not use the oem casesaver, but I have not had this issue on my DRZ-Es.

I'm sure it won't be long Tim
Doyle - are you riding an E or an S on 14/47?
Anyone riding an S on 14/47 gearing? If so, howd'ya find it?
