New Chain Needed?

im a newbie so go easy, ive a 2013 f700gs with 10,000 mile on it, original chain seems to go slack very quick, i adjust according to manual but after a week or so of normal riding it goes slack( im using an oiler), are original chains like this and if so what size and type would be best replacement, any idea on price for fitting (i think i have to go to bmw dealer as im on pcp deal, correct me if im wrong) im heading to austria for 2 weeks on bike and want to know if this is normal for chains or would i better changing now.For the likes of this do i really need to go to dealer?
 
Seems to me like you need a new did chain. I wouldn't bother with dealer save yourself a few quid. Sprockets should be ok. I have a 800 gsa with 25000 miles on. 15000 of those on a did chain. Jjh

As said ... I fit and use DID Gold Professional chains'n new (BMW) sprockets every time. Fit'n forget :thumby:

You asked for size the supplier will have the correct one its a 520 - 116 on my 800. Just another thing your mileage is high for a pcp (depending on your own plan) but exceeding the mileage allowance is a good way of making the dealers some xtra dosh. Jjh
 
i opted for 8000 a year, do you know if i have to use dealer because of pcp as i got new anakee 3,s on at christmas and they put the front one on backwards, i never knew until 4 months later phoned them and they said theyd change it around but im thinking that local shop might be better.
 
I wouldn't bother with dealer for chain or tyers. Good luck with your trip. Write a report when you get back. They go down very well here. Jjh

Sprockets should be OK?

'Should be' not good enough, they'll want checking. At that mileage I'd expect some hooking of the gearbox sprocket, which will fuck up a new chain sooner rather than later :nenau
 
BMW chains are not great - mine needed replacing after 5k miles though it was done as a good will gesture by the dealer who fitted a DID Pro chain as per the above advice so that should tell you something.

Re PCP and maintenance, the only requirement (usually) is that it is serviced in accordance with the routine specified in the manual so easiest to get the dealer to do those to save arguments. Outside of that (chains, sprockets, tyres, brakes) etc, either DIY or a garage that doesn't charge £100 per hour is the way forward.

I'm only going on my own experience with a f800 having gone trough a BMW chain another chain and the last aprox 15000 miles with a did chain still running orinogal sprockets with a scottoiler. That is why I used the word should and not will. I'm not in a position to look at the sprockets on the ops bike but I was giving my experiences with my bike. And if my experience is anything to go by they SHOULD do. One would hope that whoever is doing the job will look and make a informed decision JJH
 
New chain and sprockets for me tomorrow. 2014 800 GSA, 9.5k miles. Chain was fine for about 7k miles. Now it needs adjusting every 5 minutes and is developing tight spots. BMW shite chains.:barf

Just had my chain and sprockets changed by my local 'indie'. Less than 10k miles but the gearbox sprocket was markedly hooked. The original chain fitted by BMW was a 'Regina' which the indie says aren't bad chains although like all chain manufacturers they build different chains to different standards. He thought that the state/quality of the front sprocket might have shortened the life of the chain.

DID is definitely the way to go. They last twice as long but I'm not sure about BMW's sprockets.
 
Chain & Sprockets

I always thought the general advice was change a chain and sprockets together because if one is worn it will quickly ruin the other. Certainly for the cost and bother, while you have one apart it's a quick job to do the other.

In my experience a chain, while good, will need adjusting once or twice in it's life. When it gets to the point where it's going slack every week, then it's knackered.

The best way to check a chain/sprocket is to hold the chain in the middle of the arc it follows round the sprocket and pull it backwards off the sprocket . If, where you are pulling, a gap appears between the sprocket and the chain link then it's worn out.

Any doubts about chains or tyres before a trip, I would change them. I keep part work tyres for "out of season" (ie when I have to go to work for a bit :mad: )
 
Just for reference I'm going to change my front sprocket. The bike has done 40,000 km about 25,000 miles. The back sprocket appears ok. The current chain was installed last August and is a DID. The chain that was on the bike when I bought it as a demo in December 2013 with aprox 3,500km rapidly wore out. I replaced it with another chain which was grand for a while then needed adjustment every day. I even took out a link. I complained to the selor who blamed the sprockets. I replaced with DID chain with about 10/12,000 miles and have been going grand ever since. I'm replacing the engine sprocket with a 17 tooth one and keeping the chain. Hope this helps and sorry I can't be exact with mileage because I didn't keep notes. JJH
