New clutch needed

After 10 years and 60K miles my clutch needs replacing. It's juddering when pulling away which as it is used for London commuting I do dozens of times each journey. Oddly the juddering gets better when the clutch gets hot in heavy traffic. Obviously it can only get worse but do they ever suddenly fail leaving me stranded? How much should I expect to pay from my local independent?
