My 1100 GS was suffering from thin disks and resulting brake judder and fast pad wear.

Had priced disks some time ago from BMW and fainted. Last week phoned Motorworks about something else and remembered about my need of disks.

They sell a cast steel disk for the GS which is quite a lot cheaper than OE. Still expensive but better. I have fitted the disks with reccomended EBC double H pads and the disks are not expensive at all.

The improvement in braking performance is outstanding, why BMW ever considered using SS disks I will never know, they just look nice, I for one care not a jot about a bit of rust if better brakes area valiable.

Just thought I would share that with you all.

Happy motoring in 2004 to all

Be prepared for red dust over your boots & trousers, that doesn't come off after prolonged use :D

Ability to stop!

bit of WD40 should cure any surface rust very quickly :D

Yes and any chance of stopping presumably as well!

I replaced my 1150 disc with Motorworks cast one's. IMHO total crap and a waste of money. I have since bought new BMW items as I just couldn't stand the rust. It appears in less than 5 minutes one you have stopped in the wet. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.

However....... If you want to try them I have a set of 1150 ones sitting on the shelf (don't know if they are the same), Try them, if your happy bung me a few quid.:beerjug:

Cost of BM Discs

Dennis,

How much are the BM discs all round?

Do you need new bolts and spring washers or can you just tidy the old 'uns?

Cheers.

Jon

Dennis, does your judgement of them being crap extend beyond the fact they rust? i.e. how were they at doing the job of stopping? Better, same, worse?

I only ask as the airheads need all the help they can get and the PFM cast iron is reckoned to be the way to go. Not sure I'd bother wiv me hack as I find the braking is on another planet in comparison. :D

Who cares

Well this seems to have raised a storm, I have not yet recived the rear disk and so can only give a estimate of the costs. The fronts are about £95 each (OE from Motorworks £130+) and the rear is about £80 (OE from Motorworks £110). Again the costs are estimates as I quickly put the thoughts of money out of my mind. A quickcall to motorworks will confirm / deny as approriate.

The disks have been on since Friday an it has been doing cats and dogs here most of the week and a few flodded roads. No significant rust as yet but I know they will, the surfaces do not look as good as the OE but I have saved nearly £70 quid and got better brakes to boot. So bugger appearances I like the way I look.

PS I do not know if it is my imagination but there seems to be less brake bind and the bike is easier to push around at home / work. This is perhaps a by product of new disks, but Stainless is not a very hard metal and does react very badly to heat IE it expands like hell. Afer all how many million cars are there with stainless disks.

Morning Judge.
Their stopping power was perhaps slightly better than the standard but not exceptional. I would have thought that a better option would be a set of 6pot Harrison Billet calipers - Spenny but awsome in their power.

The rust was such that I allways had a red front wheel. Riding to work just about cleaned off the surface but within 30 minutes of parking up they were cover in the red stuff yet again - Total Nightmare.:(

discs!

Looks like it's too late now,but EBC do a set of pro lite discs that fit the 1150 not sure if 1100 are the same, and they give a massive improvement in stopping power a mate has them fitted to his 1150 with fully sintered pads and braided lines. I could not believe how he was out braking me on most corners, until we swopped bikes for one pass and then I realised my bike has shit brakes. The bite these discs give is fantastic, they are slightly thicker and have a different hole configuration, but cost about £300 alround.I feel my next mod coming on.Andy
