Riding back from Fairford air day, after 10 miles of riding, cruising along and engine cuts out and will not ignite. All electrics on, starter spins over... nothing fires. Fitted my spare and started first time. I am getting experienced at this now... my second failure.

What I need to report is that this is one of the new, black enamelled controllers. 3 months old, no corrosion whatsoever and furthermore protected with wax..

I was assured at the recall, that this version would be the end of the fuel pump controller saga.

I have reported this in Tim's sticky thread

So am I just unlucky or are the new controllers dodgy as well ? :(

My money is on weak power capacitors.

Anyone else care to guess ??

£67.50 worth of tat being chauffered around under my seat then?:blast

All dissapointingly predictable.

Last one I had that went was dry as a bone without corrosion. There again why has corrosion on the heat sink ever been a problem.

I suspect it's down to two things - heat and vibration.

So now it's six years without a fix.

If you thought that it was a fix that would never let you down and never need looking at again, why is it under your seat and not fitted?
How many of the new controllers have failed? Do you think that none ever will?
It's a pain in the arse if it yours leaves you high and dry, but components are not infallible. There's no reason to suggest that all of the new controllers are as dodgy as the originals. Then again, only time will tell...

Really sorry to hear about your failed FPC. hope this didn't spoil the really fantastic day at RIAT.... lets hope the F22 hasn't got any of these.

Why would I replace a working part?

This just means that when my 5 year old :thumb2 controller blows, I will have to buy another spare to replace the spare:blast

What is the wax they use to seal the new ones is it available in the real world?BMW said it costs about £1000 a can.

You would replace the working part which has a proven failure rate with one which you believe to be a permanent fix so that you don't have to swap them over when you're out on the bike. Then again, you maybe enjoy roadside repairs :nenau

5 years and how many miles?
9 thousand only! I bought it last Summer with just 3k on it.
If corrosion is the culprit, then mileage is irrelevent - I've heard of them blowing after a few hundred miles:eek:
Every time I inspect my FPC, it's sat in water. I dry it & apply petroleum jelly.
I bought a spare from NOG, who told me EVERY GS12 ever built was being re-called for a new FPC, and that when mine was re-called they would refund me the £67.50 as long as it was still in sealed bag!

That recall never happened?

I never thought for one moment it was a permanent fix - I was told it would be!

My recently replaced " quality enhancement" FPC also failed and for me it was the straw that broke the camel's back. bye bye 1200 :(

Clarks BMW told me they just spraywax the whole area - Must have meant £10.00 per tin:augie

I was advised to spray it with a really good waxy stuff, so I used a spare can of Finnigans Waxoyl. That is NOT a BMW formal recommendation btw Fat lot of use that did ! :D

Maybe it has overheated, who knows. The debate continues. I was told by the dealer that corrosion WAS the cause of the failures and this is why they have produced the enamelled version.

My previous, original 2007 failed and that had NO corrosion and also had NO protective wax and had NO protective cover to overheat it, which used to be fitted in earlier days.

My bike hasn't seen any water since the 'recall FPC' was fitted in May because we have suffered a drought in the west country. The bike is also garaged. So water/corrosion cannot be blamed :rob

Carry a spare is what I recommended in April 2007 and that SAME spare continues to save my enthusiasm for these 1200's.

Not many were aware about FPC's in those days, but now everyone knows about them, thanks to Tim
