Hi all.
My first post and my first GS.
I got it at a good price as it has a mechanical issue!
It had thrown an exhaust valve and made a mess of the top of the piston.
I am looking at either an engine rebuild or buy a low mileage unit and throw it in..
They seem to be selling for between £1000 and £2000.
My bike is a late 2015 model. Will a 2016 or 2017 engine be the same as prefer a newer low mileage replacement if my present engine cannot be saved?
Anyone done it?

Thanks.

Would assume it is possible , BMW replaced enough complete motors due to corrosion issues , I cann't see BMW having huge stocks of 1 or 2 year old motors lying about at the factory .

Replacement engines would be current production specs with whichever upgrades had been incorporated into the newer models

You might be able to repair what you have. Recommended is MikeyBoy:

feel free to call in for a cuppa, call first.

I had a 2016 engine fitted in my 2014 GS under warranty due to paint issues and it had the heavier flywheel and a better gear change.

I'm not sure about the 2017 engine though as the bike was updated that year with an E4 emission engine. Would the injectors and ECU etc. be the same if it's a lower emission engine?

I assume a damaged piston means engine out and split the cases, as the LC engines have barrels cast as one with the crankcase.

Surely that is the decider OP. Has the valve/piston copulation led to the bore being scored, or indeed the cam chain breaking.

If not, then it should be repairable - I have fixed a similar scenario with an in-line 4, but never a boxer. In my case the head was still good, I just needed valves, guides & the seats re-cut on the one pot, along with a new cam chain & spark plug. Even the piston was salvageable, much to my surprise, as luckily most of the valve head that failed, either exited out through the exhaust promptly, or jammed in the port.

If you have stripped the top end back, have you got any pics so we can look at the actual damage here?

If it's just dropped a valve (and a few of them did this), you can remove head/barrel/piston without removing the engine.

so if its only a piston/head thats goosed ,its the crank cased to be split ,is that correct

Some great info there thanks chaps.
The gumtree engine looks a good one, but as stated above will the emissions aspect affect its compatibility? I have been offered a 2016 having only done 6000 miles at similar money. I will send some pics of my engine damage but will the cost be much different as a replacement plus I think I would prefer a 6000 miles engine and gearbox to a 55000 miles one..

I had a new engine put in my 2014 gsa in 2018 due to corrosion issues. I saw the invoice and it was £7k including labour. I’m not sure during which years the engine was upgraded but I was told it was a 2018 engine being fitted.

Thanks. Would it have been a straight swap or lots of ‘upgrade’ issues.
I hope it will be ok to just drop in a 2017 engine.

I wasn’t present when the labour was carried out but it was all completed within 24 hrs, old engine out, new one in, so I’m assuming it was a straightforward swop.

Thanks.
I have bought the gumtree one above. Thanks for pointing it out.
I figured low mileage 2017 engine and gearbox was a better bet, if a little more expensive!
Don’t know if the seller is on this site.
Anyone any ideas for transport of it from Scotland??

Merry Xmas.

Take care bud, £1k sounded well cheap to me; too cheap maybe? We have seen similar ads from darkest Jockland before that turned to shite, usually complete bikes admittedly, so make absolutely sure you check out the seller & the body of the ad (cut/paste from elsewhere) carefully before parting with your hard earned. Hopefully I have got it all wrong!

With respect to rebuilding damaged engines, pistons, gaskets, machine work etc soon add up especially on a blown up engine, I rebuilt a high mileage but running Suzuki gsx1100 sz katana engine ten years ago, by the time you get a Wiseco big bore kit ( cheaper than Suzuki over size ones) pay for a rebore , full gaskets, gas flowed head , cam chain and tensioner blades plus oil pump and a few other bits you have a £1000 bill.
Do not hand over cash for the gumtree motor until you know it is legit and has engine numbers etc and if possible see the v5c for the bike it came from and get a reciept

Got the engine number from Graham in Scotland: 122EN23170945
I have paid via PayPal so hopefully that is as safe as possible.
He states he got it from a dealer friend when an engine was changed due to slight corrosion issues.
Just got to sort out a courier now to collect it. Any pointers?
