That dealer is going to be for the high jump if BMW ever find out. Unless Graham is lying and he stole it out of the dealer's scrap skip ?

Wow, that is such a waste!
I would think a lot of the engines that BMW wanted to be scrapped will live again.
Explains why there are so many for sale with slight corrosion issues.
I am all for recycling.

See if the seller will strap or band the engine onto a wooden pallet, then get PalletLine to collect it and deliver to you. If it's on a pallet it'll keep it reasonably safe. Ask your local depot if they've go a tail-lift truck to deliver it to you, otherwise a low load height van like a Transit. Alan
Once the motor turns up could you keep us posted with the engine swap maybe some pics of work in progress and stuff? 
Few rules before you fit it, drop the oil and check for debris in it, new oil and filter and give it a thorough going over before fitting.
Once fitted and plumbed in with oil and water spin it over with the plugs out to get up oil pressure before attempting to start.
Personally I would then do a further oil and filter change once it is up to temperature and has had a short run.
At work our workshops rather than rebuilding blown engines would fit the patrol cars and pandas with used motors that they then fully serviced with a belt kit etc fitted.
Re the replaced engines due to corrosion first few from each production run affected apparently went back to BMW rest were supposed to be scrapped

Oh dear - looks like someone tried riding on after the valve drop/stem failure. Is the cylinder bore OK?
Just a thought - surely, this motor you are buying is owned, effectively, by BMW, so the vendor would have no legal right to sell it on.

The bores look ok but haven’t moved the piston so can only see the top of the cylinder.

I have been told that BMW are not interested unless someone tries to make a warranty claim for a ‘replaced’ engine.

Will the bike not need the BMW dealer to run his diagnostic software before the ECU recognises the engine?
I'd have thought so too
IIRC if you retro fit OE foglamps to a GS the dealer has to tell the bike that the lights are fitted so that they work and I'd have thought that a replacement engine might be a little more problematic than simply plug & play
I have no idea. My next task will be to get a mechanic to fit it.. The seller of the engine offered to get it fitted for £350 , inc service by a BMW mechanic, but I do not fancy the 500 mile round trip to Scotland!
It might be worthwhile , if you can arrange it to be fitted over a couple of days over a weekend then you can see the motor and assess it before it is fitted and then see it and hear it running when fitted before you hand over any money.
Worth the price of hiring a van and an over night stop
Exactly my thoughts, but I would need to put aside 2 days to do the journey, trailer it there and back, stay overnight etc, etc.

Firstly get the engine delivered to you then assess how bad the corrosion damage is on it. Repair that first.
If your not mechanical or cant face the challenge of swapping the engine find someone local to do it for you.
Dont be tempted by their offer to do the engine if something gets held up in the process your screwed and they will have you in a nice position to extract more sponds.

The labour costs for swopping an engine out of a GS should be nearer a £1k. That’s what Allan Jeffries invoiced BMW for with mine.
I am sure a dealer would be charging that, but I am informed that a good mechanic would have engine out and in within a day, so a nice days pay for someone. So torn between getting the engine sent to me and trying to find someone who could bo the job here, or get it all done in Scotland !!
If the original electronics are retained I don't see how the ECU will know it's dealing with a different engine.
