Simple question.

If a new engine is fitted under warranty for whatever reason, does the new engine have a new number ?
 
Yup and the dealer (or yourself) probably have to send off your log book to have it amended to keep documents correct

Proper answer

If they give you a new engine under warranty it will come without an engine number. The dealer will then get the original engine number stamped on it.

Who does the stamping? Does the factory issue an engine with duplicate number and therefore the old engine gets destroyed ?

Dealer does or arranges for the old engine number to be put on the new engine. My dealer sent the new engine off to a specialist firm to be stamped/etched.
 
Not the engine but one of my 1200's needed a new front subframe, there was quite a delay, when i enquired as to the reason of the delay it was because they couldn't find an engraver to do the frame number!!!!!

As a local to them engraver i was a little unimpressed (!) with their excuse as i hadn't seen or heard from anybody concerning the work, picked it up, engraved it and returned it within 2 hrs, that included drawing the little symbols and drawing the font from scratch (!!)

My bike has been fitted with a complete new engine, gearbox and clutch. The engine number is unique to the new engine and cast into the underside of one cylinder. I had to get the V5 updated with the new engine number. Now you have some facts.........oh, and it was replaced under warranty
 
We don't know what was fitted. New engine is a very loose term and seldom means new everything. Was it a complete new unit crankcases barrels heads including all inside parts or just new cases and crank. Or was it a lesser job with new pistons rings and barrels and maybe some head work. ?
 
Currently when you tell dvla about a change of engine number they are asking for either an engineers report or report from the dealer who fitted it before they register the change.

Also make damned sure that if changes are made (even if the nos are kept the same and engraved on a new engine or frame ) that you have documented records of the changes and they stay with the bike while you have it and when it is passed on.

It will save embarrassment when two or three years down the line someone queries an obviously altered frame or engine number, either when checked by an mot station (frame) a police officer or a dealer buying in a bike
 
I can confirm this from experience... actually mine ended up unnumbered all the time I had it :-o

I have bought and sold:D...............a few 1100's and 1150's and 1 or 2 have have had a short engine replacement for one reason or another, all documented with BMW on their central computer, via the chassis VIN, but the new engine has always been numberless (unless a new number is engraved 'outside' the factory)

One quick way to tell whether a BMW bike has had a new engine, look where the engine number should be and if it's blank, then you know and can have a look at the BMW computer to see why, all very plain and straightforward and transparent

When buying a used bike, how many people actually check he engine or even frame number, not many:D

Same with frame changes, replacement frames are blank and it's up to the dealer to put one on, if the client insists as Shep has detailed in Post 12
 
So if a replacement engine has no serial number, would I have to tell the insurance company as it has now become more desirable for thieving scumbags ?
