NEW ENGINE!

Hello guys and girls! I could do with some advice?

BMW have come back today and my 2015 GSA (5k miles) is going for major surgery! New engine, drive train and bevel!(Corrosion)

How long did it take from start of claim to confirmation of work being approved?

Mine took 2 days, engine and drive shaft replaced, AND a letter confirming they had replaced the engine and the new engine number so that I coukd send it off to DVLA.

To be honest I used BMW North Oxford and I think there service was pretty fair? BMW questioned a few things on the pics they had taken so I had t wash the baby and send new pics!

In total about 4 weeks to sort the claim and they phoned me and book her in for surgery!

New engine, drive and bevel!

Just in time for her first birthday! Whoop whoop

Seen loads of comments regarding corrosion and new engine replacements but absolutely no photo evidence to let us know how bad this is.

Even the other now closed thread has no pictures.

I have a 2006 GSA but am in the throes of trading for an 2015 LC.

What am I looking for regarding engine corrosion.

i.e how bad is it? Could someone please post some pictures to show how bad this is???

If you want pictures I posted some of my engine on this site. Or pm me and I'll email you some if you like?

Jersey, go to page 4, from main water-cooled be page, thread title is 'engine corrosion- result'.
My pics of crap paint are post #30. Other pics of crap paint are available

Are the new replacement engines fixed as in been properly painted/anodised?? or are they just giving replacements that eventually will corrode the same?

My new silver engine paint looks the same as the old engine paint. Only time will tell. So that may be in a week or two:D

What year is that bike ?

2014

Corrosion was noted on the 1 year service but I didn't follow it up until month 23 when I was arranging this year's service... Just in time.

That's shocking for a 2 year old bike.

My 2013 bike went the same after 6 months. So far new engine, swing arm and final drive due to corrosion / paint issues. Screen changed due to cracking at mountings, exhaust replaced as flap stuck and tank panel replaced as it bulged and wouldn't sit properly. Long time lurker so hi by the way.

My corrosion damaged engine had a 30mm long area of paint lifting about 25% of the width of the least damage in the photo above, it was on the upper horizontal junction between left hand crankcase & cylinder head. Plus a similar instance on the underside of the right hand side. Apparently that is the start of what you see above.

In addition the left hand cylinder head cover had paint bubbling in a round patch on the front overall about 30 x 12mm, it looked like a paint stripping hot gun had been used on the surface.

New Engine!

Took the GS LC to Bahnstormers this morning for its 2nd year service and a NEW ENGINE !
still it will save me the cost of the Oil and Filter lol. Missing the bike already as the weather here in southern England is glorious! Hopefully the bike can be collected next Saturday, however spotted more white spots on swing arm and final drive so it looks like those need to be replaced as well. The service adviser said that they might get clearance to replace them whilst its in, But might not be ready for Saturday boo hoo.
Also I think I will be getting another silver engine not a black one so hopefully I can stop this one corroding.
So here is to day1 of no bike week.

I just got a new silver engine too, for the corrosion/bubbling at cylinder/block joint. This one has a MUCH better gear change in the lower three gears. Thanks to Vines Guildford for sorting it with no hassle. The old engines go back to Germany. The next question is - what's the warranty? I have about nine months left on the (rest of?) the bike?

Have they done anything to address the under the paint corrosion problem or do they just do the same again?

No changes have been done it looks like the case joint faces are machined after painting and the bare metal allows damp to get under the paint and cause the problems

I collected my bike with new engine and drive train on Thursday. If I hadn't read of the paint problem here, I wouldn't have even spotted the problems and pursued the matter. Early days, but the gearbox feels much sweeter, to the extent that 1st to 2nd on the quick-shifter looks to be usable. Result!
