NEW ENGINE!

Hay everyone I have my bike back with New E4 engine!

Ok starting motor took 3 weeks but now have the bike back and Matt confirmed it's the new E4 engine as it needed the new starting motor! Also there is now a massive shortage on starting motors!

My bike is great after 3 weeks on the loaner!

I contacted my dealer today after noticing the 'white spots' when cleaning the bike over the weekend. Have been told there is nothing they can do as the bike is out of manufacturers warranty and the Premium Used Warranty they sang about when buying doesn't cover this! Pretty pissed. Worth going direct to BMW? Anyone else tried this?

How old is the bike? How many owners has it had? Once you provide this information people on here will have more of an idea. There are lots of cases of engines/swing arms being replaced a few months out if warranty, a lot of it depends on the dealer though. Some people have had really good experiences (Wollastons sourced a replacement bike for me and kept me on an RT whilst they were trying to get hold of a suitable replacement) and other people have not been as fortunate. The extended warranty does not cover corosion.

3 years old - registered in April 2013. 1 previous owner and bought from Bahnstormer in Alton. It's done 13500 miles. Dealer has since come back and said if I provide more pics they will follow it up with BMW uk...

'billyback' search my posts (via my user name) as I got a new engine with bike the same age/number of owners etc, as yours. Or 'pm' me if you'd like.

After reading this thread I checked my 2014 bike and found furring on the swing arm, paint bubbling around the crankcase cover bolts and on other spots on the engine. The bike has been examined by Bahnstormers at Maidenhead and a request made to BMW to see if there is anything they would do. The bike was purchased second hand and in all honesty I didn't notice the problems and was unaware of this problem until I read this thread.
It is blatantly obvious this problem didn't suddenly happen overnight. The bike has been garaged by both the first owner and by me at all times and was used for commuting to work.
The bikes condition is immaculate apart from the outlined issues.
BMW refused to do anything not even the offer of me paying towards fitting etc as I was the second owner and out of warranty by 1 month when I purchased it.
Do I say to hell with it, ride the bike and slowly watch the paint rot away or do I have the bike examined by a specialist, identify the root cause of the issue and go from there.
Any constructive views or criticism would be appreciated

You bought the bike out of warranty with BMW and by the sound of it outside their dealer network so no surprise they are not interested.

Not a lot you can do apart from try to avoid further corrosion ACF50 etc and ride it

As above:

Purchased outside the manufacturers warranty period and a 'Private Sale' ? therefore BMW have no responsibility towards you as the 2nd owner

You could go down the route of having it examined by a 'specialist' but regardless of their findings BMW's retort is likely to be "the cost of the bike was reflected in the condition at the time of purchase"

There are many advantages to buying a used approved bike from the dealer network. One of them is the extended 2 year warranty (that wouldn't have covered the issues you have had in this case) and another is the back-up you get from BMW if Mondial don't step up to the plate during the claims process (which has happened for others who have bought a corroded, used by from the network).

I feel your pain, but doubt there is anything now that you can do apart from either riding it or part exchanging it back in to the network and buying a 'used approved' BMW

Many thanks, I will have a read. The dealers are submitting a claim for me so will see how that goes.

Hi there Steve, I started this topic and I cannot believe how long its gone on for, it even beats the Hilltop tuning ones. I am a car mechanic and was seriously in two minds as to asking my dealer (Bahnstormer) about the engine replacement because at the end of the day the bike will never break down due to the flaking paint, and its seems an awful waste of raw materials to resolve "the Problem" .
I sat on the problem (pun intended) for about 3 months and just before the warranty was due to expire I approached the dealer to get their opinion and low and behold they rolled over and replaced the lot! So I have a 25 month old 7k mile bike with a 1k miles drivetrain. Some would say im lucky but the truth of the matter is the bike is still great to ride and maybe this engine might start to corrode but I don't think its any "better" now its just got some new parts that BMW were willing to fit. So please don't get too hooked up on this corrosion thing because in years to come it will just be part of the bikes character. There are many reasons for bikes holding (or not) their value and I don't think corrosion will be a major player, just look on the dealers forecourt (I do) and you will see other Gs Lc's with corrosion and then look at the price they aint discounted. Sorry if this sounds like ive a new engine HaHa, because its not.
I started this topic just to let people know about what was happening to me and my bike, and if its helped people with their bikes that's all well and good, but I do feel now that as time has gone by BMW are now feeling the financial pain of all these replacements and are beginning to close the door on this fiasco. Hoping that's not the case for you and I hope you get somewhere with BMW on this.
Wishing you Well Nigel.

Myself, I feel the same way. I have a 20K two year old GSA, which is two weeks out of warranty and has corrosion issues- drivetrain- ( tiny bubbling ) and corrosion just starting on engine- ( head meets block ).

Its on a pCP so not too bothered but I brought it to Marshalls attention and they took photos etc. I`m going there tomorrow for my car service so will see what they say. To be honest the bikes great but two things- it is unacceptable for this to happen-and I either want it sorted ( new engine - seems a little much but there you go ) or- and most probably the solution - I would want a great deal on a new GS. We`ll see what they say.

Totally get it that it no way reflects upon how the bike goes etc but would I expect it on a £7K suzuki?- absolutely not.

Nigel you are quite correct i suspect this fiasco has hit them hard. Yes the bike was second hand and yes bought outside the dealership chain, but does this make it any worse. It has always been my contention that these issues are not corrosion based but a failing in the manufacturing process, if it was corrosion the engine would be affected throughout, not in the spots where the paint comes under stress, in my case where the bolts have secured the crankcase cover.
The fact that BMW were quick of the mark to replace everything under warranty with these issues, to me indicates they must know there was a problem otherwise why spend so much money to clean up their mess.
If i was buying a cheap chinese import bike i wouldn't have even bothered, but seeing this is a premium marque, which sells itself on being a world beater and costs more than the average family car, then i feel a tadge agreived, that and the disparity between dealerships
Looks like i suck it up and get on with riding. Lesson learnt lets hope they haven't cheated on the emission results also.

Cheers for replies

Steve

Hi

I bought a 2 year old GS LC in April this year from my local dealer & it came with the Premium Used Warranty. I took it in in August for the dealer to have a look at the bubbling paint on the engine. They raised it with BMW, with photos they took and BMW replaced the engine FOC. I have to pay for the 600 mile service. Have only ridden for about 150 miles since as been on holiday but the gearchange seemed to be less clunky.

Also, I asked the dealer if they'd had any repeat engine changes and they said not. They implied that the only new engine that had shown signs of corrosion was down to lack of care. I also asked what to do if corrosion re-appears and was told to bring it back in before the extended warranty expires.

I'm visiting Berlin at the end of November and intend to do the factory tour. Might have a quiet word with someone about it :-)

Regards

The tour is after hours so best of luck finding someone to talk to about your corrosion problems.

My 2014 GSA was 5 weeks out of warranty when the engine corrosion was brought to my attention by a fellow sufferer, there is no other corrosion on my bike and I don't have extended warranty.

I brought it to the dealer who has submitted a claim to BMW and I'm waiting to hear.

Obviously looking at it now the corrosion has been there for some time prior to being out of warranty and the dealer who both supplied and serviced the bike must have both known and seen this apparently common BMW fault in a certain batch and failed in their duty of care to bring it to the attention of the customer, so I'm not pleased.

I'd like to hear of other "just out of warranty" experiences.

Thanks.

BMW accepted the claim and a new engine and drive have been fitted to my bike which makes me very happy.

First impressions are of a much improved gearbox.

My engine was replaced in April/May, probably by the same dealer as you, and I spotted a little bit of the dreaded white flecks appearing through the paint on the engine block again in mid-July. The bike had not seen a wet road in that time, there was no salt on the road and it'd only covered about 1500 miles as I'd been on holiday in the States for nearly three weeks in late June/early July. It's nowt to do with neglect....

It hasn't got any worse yet, but I'm dreading what it may look like after winter storage in a cold garage

Take it back to the dealer now, otherwise they may turn round at a later date and BMW will tell you where to go.

So what's the life expectancy of a WC 2 years ! Once it's out of the 2nd warranty ? If lucky gesture of goodwill .
