New Garmin for motorcycles - Zumo 350LM

As one of the biggest gripes, from current users, is about the current units noty having sufficient memory you think they would have made a point about these new models having ample room for the future evolution of the mapping data.

The fact that they haven't alluded to this in the slightest or stated the memory capacity indicates to me that it's the same.

Mind you, I'm hoping to be proved entirely wrong...

There are reviews and video showcases appearing all over the web for the 350, we need someone to plug one in and find out how much internal storage there is.

I agree with you Bumpkin re drive size but sadly also agree re whether they have learned their lesson or not.

I would guess not but hope I am proved wrong too.

Just a thought..........perhaps in the future they could make the same model but with differing hard drive sizes and priced accordingly, a bit like computer companies do.

I for one would pay a bit more for a degree of upgradability using the internal memory.

lifetime, really!!!

Regarding the updates, I really dont like the use of the term "lifetime". A true lifetime would be for as long as its still working. Calling it such is a bit of marketing bullshit at least and contentious at most.

Just my 2penneth.

Must be going back to the contacts on the bottom the same as Garmin 400/550 .Seems daft going back to that ,When the 600 series seemed to fair better with the contacts on the back in wet weather. No m.p.3. Player again seems daft ,Lift time updates again ,How much space left on unit for future updates.First impressions not great.

How is it bullshit?

Their probably referring to the length of time it's going to take to get the maps loaded and working.

Zumo memory

Have I missed something regarding the Zumo memory size?

I've got the Zumo 400 (it was **cheap**), which only ever had UK and Ireland mapping, and so has sod all memory.

A £6 8GByte SD card later, and now my unit has all tiles for the full European mapping on it (loaded using Mapsource). That's everything from Iceland to Turkey. And loadsa room for music too.

Cost almost nothing to do, and was no hassle at all.

Is there something about the 550 / 660 units that means this is all harder? Or have I missed something?

No, same applies though with the 660 you loose Junction View and 3D buildings for any area loaded via Mapsource or Basecamp.

Whilst it's easy to do it your way the simplicity of just doing an online update and having all mapping installed to Zumo and PC, as was possible when it all fitted on, was far easier.

+1

Also, I like to listen to music when I ride and if I have my 550 navigating off the SD card I can't.

Memory is pretty cheap these days so it would be stupid of Garmin (unless thy plan deliberate obsolescence) not to increase the internal storage memory.

However, they have excluded 3D Mapping, which I think releases 1GB or so of storage, which then allows the whole of Europe to be stored in internal memory! So it is possible there is no increase in standard memory capacity.

Just as long as the unit has SD Card capability AND they improve their software to make map upgrades simpler, it won't be the end of the world if internal memory is not increased.

As far as I'm concerned the size of the internal memory is one of the burning questions.

I emailed Garmin Europe the other day to ask and just got a reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

Looking into this for you, I can confirm that the new Zumo 350 has
7.25GB internal memory.

Looks like they've future proofed it for a year or two at least then

Zumo 350 display: "WQVGA colour TFT with white backlight" Same a Zumo 660

Montana dispaly: "bright, transflective 65k colour TFT, dual-orientation touchscreen; sunlight readable" :thumb2 :thumb2 :thumb2

Why haven't Garmin they just put a bluetooth chip and MP3 playing software in the Montana???????? must be to easy

Because... even though the Garmin Engineers are ok people...

The Carpet-Baggers that run the show are always manipulating the market by 'allowing' only certain things in a given GPS.

They don't want their 'premium' market people to just buy something cheap that will do the same job.

Al...

No mention of headphone jack either

Is that what you use?

How do you hear the turn by turn directions or is that visual only?

1:50k OS maps are about £187. Unit could have been useful for driving and walking but at that price better buying two, cheap car and hillwalking one.

Is there not a gadget that ticks all the boxes - especially at £400 - £500.

I wonder how much of that is 'free space' though??

Hopefully a fair bit for future proofing as you say. :thumb2

Montana powered mount has a headphone socket, and you can get maps for free if you search. Someone put a link on here recently for the free maps.
