Having a new gearbox next week, foc from MrBM, because he slipped up on the Q/R connectors and they leaked on the box, the damage is only cosmetic but they say its cheaper to fit a box than respray, so the question is with 14000 miles done is it worth a new clutch while in bits, as I only have to pay for the parts!

Whenever I've had the gearbox and engine split on any car or bike I've had, I've replaced the friction plate and (if applicable) the thrust bearing, unless it's almost new.

When you look at the expense and complexity of replacing a relatively cheap part, it's false economy not to. I'd definitely use a genuine BMW part, too.

Mike:)

Yes.

The labour cost of sticking a new clutch in could be around £700, so you'd be postponing that cost by another 14k miles in effect.

Keep the old one as well, then you could use someone like Steptoe to put it back in in when required.

JMHO.

So £130 for parts, does that sound ok?

About right, Sherlocks quote £130 for a complete clutch inc. all plates, bolts & springs.

I'd put a new clutch in & try to get my hands on the old gearbox at some point. BMW dealers have to keep warranty exchange parts for three months in case BMW want them back. After three months, the dealer can do what he likes with them. If you're on good terms with the dealer, raise the subject. It's difficult for a dealer to use the gearbox on someone elses bike at a later date & it owes them nothing, offer them a reasonable price for it.

Ahem cough cough two GSA tanks @ £150 each... cough cough
