New GS TE...Front brake failure

Jumped on the bike Tuesday morning and the first time I had to use the front brakes the lever came almost back to the handle bar. Tried to pump but made no difference. Continued into work gingerly and phoned BMW. They sent recovery and arranged a loan vehicle.

Initially they said that it needed bled...don't think so! The technician left it overnight and next day they contacted Motarrad technical support who authorised replacement of the master cylinder. This was changed but obviously was not the problem and so then they changed out a calliper. In the report they state there was seepage from a piston seal.

I have just picked the bike up and everything feels good again but I am pissed off. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Brakes on a new bike should not fail...what has happened to quality control? The T junction that I was stopping for was busy and it did shake me up a bit. The bike only has about 400 miles on it!

I know of one person this happened to exactly as you describe, brand new GSA. Resolved very similar to your experience.

Update, brake problems again, mileage still under 1000 miles. It felt different this time, I could pump the lever to get a firm response but obviously something far wrong. The bike recovered to the garage again.

I have rejected the bike and BMW have conceded and will replace the it. The downside is that according to the dealer, (John Clark, Dundee) I have to wait until the end of June for a red GS TE. Surely Motarrad must have access to a bike in the UK? Has anyone been in a position like this before? Can I just ask for my money back and buy from another dealer?

If I were you I would take what colour they have and ask for a few free accessories in lieu of having a red bike.

Maybe i have had to many Gs,s but really can't get to excited about the colours its the ride thats the really important bit.> IMHO

The loaner that I've got is a Mini 4wd countryman and I didn't choose to spend £15k to be driving round in this. They have said that if I pay £375 for power shift they can give me a bike earlier with spoked wheels. This is my second GS but disappointed with BMW this time.

Take their offer but get them to remove the stupid power shifter to put into their spares bin.... And then you don't have to pay the 375 for a piece of kit that belongs on a race bike

My understanding (having rejected two of the damn things) is that if you have rejected the bike and BMW have agreed to replace it they have effectively given you a refund and will put it towards a new machine. You are entitled to the money and to take it elsewhere. However, that said I would personally stay with the dealer that handled the rejection. In your situation I think I would offer to split the cost of the quick shifter and get on the new bike to save me any more hassle.

I am now dealing with Ryan at JC. He is going to chase BMW for an earlier delivery. Good advice about the Powershifter, I will ask how easy it is to remove or discount. Am I right in assuming that the spoked wheels will be tubed rather than tubeless?

1200gs spoked wheels are tubless. Personally I prefer them to alloys. More give and look better !
As for power shifter , I had one retro fitted on my GSA and like it !
As for dealers JC have a good reputation and I would stick with them . Its a while since I have used them , but when I needed them they were very good !

I hope you don't mind me throwing my two bobs worth in.you've had a disappointing bmw experience so far,the quickshifter will be a bugger to remove and cost the dealership a good chunk of workshop time,so if it where me {and it was a bit when I bought mine} I'd be pressing them to supply supply it as a freebe as a gesture of goodwill given the nature of the potentially near fatal concequences had you really needed to brake hard.I'm sure they would rather do that than have you walk into a KTM dealership and tell them all about it.

I was willing to compromise on the change of specification but the dealer would not reduce the ' shifter.

"I have asked the question already and as it would be considered betterment Motorrad would not support it. We as a dealer have to supply the vehicle as consignment price therefore any reduction in the cost at £375 would result in a loss for us which as I am sure you understand I can not do."

I have therefore requested that Motorrad ship up a loan bike until my new one is ready (S1000XR, can't be selling them!)
