new GS vs old 1150

I think I'm just going to have to book a test ride and take it from there.

At the end if the day if you prefer an old bike hang on to your 1150. The new LC is be superior to the 1150 is every way - will be interested to hear if that's not the case ;)

The 1150GS will still be going strong and fully rebuildable, long after the 12GS WC has been recycled, due to a component being to complex and expensive to fix - rendering it not viable to keep on the road

Modern vehicles have a finite life, they are designed to be too complex to fix - so they recycled and replaced

All part of the big corporate plan nowadays

you might soon be finding parts for 1150s that are NLA.

Logically an inline 4-cylinder Japanese engine has 'character' because you can identify its particular characteristics! So Japanese 4-cylinder engines have 'character', boxer engines have 'character', hmmmm single cylinder engines have 'character' etc, etc, etc.

Vincent: Yeah, but do you consider a 1200 Hex Head to be a filthy animal?
Jules: I wouldn't go so far as to call a Hex filthy, but they're definitely dirty. But, a 1150 got personality. Personality goes a long way.
Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a 1200LC had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?
Jules: Well, we'd have to be talkin' about one charming motherfucking 1200GS. I mean, he'd have to be ten times more charming than that Oil Head 1150 on Pavey's Walters Arena, you know what I'm saying?
Vincent: [laughing] That's good.

Vehicles peaked in the 80's, cars and bikes,

Since then the only thing that has changed is the fuelling to meet emissions and the electronic gadgetry for the iPod generation,

Strip all that stuff off and the wc would still be a fantastic bike, as would the bikes before it,

They lack character because they make up for the deficiencies in the rider or driver, with traction control, abs, ESA, fuel computer etc,

The more vehicles get replaced the worse it gets, and the more they get, the duller they are

What they do is make it easy to go faster, but if anything the roads are making us go slower with reduced speed limits and cameras.

.............

As long as someone makes the parts that you need or you can get then from the scrap yard.

A manufacturer is only required to make the parts for 10yrs after they cease production.

So next year I understand was when the R1200 GS was first introduced

ohh that will be the 10yrs up.

My son has an immaculate Z650 - try getting engine components for that - we were getting one cog from USA another from Netherlands

The airheads will die first, then the 11's.................so a good few years left yet;)

:D

many of the early airhead GS parts are NLA.

i suspect that the tendency for a manufacturer to hold parts for years is disappearing. see ducati. the 1150 does have the advantage of massive parts interchangeability, but then, so do airheads. tanks and body parts probably go first.

i don't think it's imminent though :)

BMW are still producing a pretty good range of airhead parts, some of the prices have rocketed up, main looms are now over £400, but I think that it will be still worthwhile for BMW and others to continue making parts.

In some ways the choice of parts has got Better for airheads, just look at the variety of tuning parts now available.

And the WC:rolleyes: parts not available yet, at the moment that extra's i.e alarm fobs, topboxes engine bars etc etc ,really hope that they don't start breaking cos you'll being waiting for ever for replacement parts.

But those parts are unavailable because they are winding UP unlike the 1150 which is winding DOWN

I couldn't agree more. I've watched the GS for years, but always found it verging on the agricultural and a bit asthmatic. And so always scurried back to more appealing (to me) brands. The WC is the first BMW with the combination of performance, sophistication and promise to cause me to open my wallet.

It's been a long time coming, but the wait has been worth it:JB:JB:JB
