Looking Good Adm.

I like the "blacked" out look.

Early days I know, but how does it compare, so far, to the GS?

Well, that's a difficult question to answer right now as I am still running it in and haven't been past 7k RPM, and my GS was 10 years old so not really a fair comparison.

But so far, it's a proper missile. It really takes off after about 4.5K RPM and just keeps going. I can't wait until I can take it to the redline and see what it can really do. And it stops really well too - even though the pads wont be properly bedded in yet.

It's very docile around town and pulls decently at low RPMs so I guess that and the mad top end is the variable valve timing doing it's thing.

The active suspension is superb. It just quietly does it's thing and keeps sag at 30%. In road mode it eats up bumps. Sport mode is a lot firmer. As for the handling, it's very neutral and goes exactly where you point it with no complaining. I haven't gone anywhere near the limits of the thing yet though.

So far, I am very impressed with it. It's leaps and bounds above my 2011 GS, but then you'd expect that. I'll have to go and test ride a 1250 Shift Cam bike to be able to really compare properly. Harley have done a good job for sure. It's probably not as refined as a new GS, but then BMW have had 40 years to get things properly dialled in.

Saw one in Laragh, Co. Wicklow last Tuesday. It whizzed by at a Tee junction so only got a fleeting glimpse. Can't say I like the front, 1960's Hoover meets Thunderbirds. I noticed one roadtester (Baldy) tapping the cylinder casing showing it was plastic.... Look forward to seeing one at standstill.
Hope it grows on someone!

I saw a grey one near Wallingford, Oxon yesterday afternoon

I was underwhelmed

My guess is that it will be so far from traditional HD owners wants, and equally far from KTM & BMW riders preferences, that it will be discontinued as quickly as the VRod etc were.

So only on sale for 18 years then ?

Fcuk me, I thought they'd been discontinued donkeys years ago - can't remember the last time I saw one.

Still reckon the Panam will be dropped in a short space.

You may be right , but I’m not so sure .
But it’ll certainly outlive the R18 as I think Harley doing a BMW has been much more successful than BMW doing a Harley !

You are correct - I had no idea the V-Rod was in production for so long.

Good report. I collected mine last week after also trading in a 1200GS. Not used it that much so far but today I think that I am finally getting tuned into it. The problem I have been having is missing the torque and sound of the GS. I have been experimenting with the different modes and now created my own which gives me max engine braking with Sports performance and for me it seems to have done the trick.
Still finding the indicator switch position a pain but other than that no real problems.
Given its price I think Harley have sold this bike cheap to get a foot old into the adventure market. As you say an equivalent GS would cost a lot more money.
Do I miss the Boxer engine ! without a doubt and given the choice now even though the HD is faster and better specced I would have another GS tomorrow but given the money I would lose in trading it in its not an option. Might be in a years time though.

Rode mine back from Cirencester to Guildford area earlier today via backroads and now it's run in I have to say it can seriously haul arse. It's a great bike with a few rough edges.

It's docile but beautifully balanced at low revs, really comes alive about 4.5K, gets much stronger up to about 7K and then goes nuts from 7K to 9.5K

Sorta like a GS then and not even in the same league as a KTM ;)

Because they were different to the usual Harley fare? :nenau

Saw this at a Bikermate Meet last Wednesday.

It certainly made me smile.

Is yours a black one and did I see you and a group of about 8 others coming through Kintbury this afternoon?

Mine is a black one, but I was riding solo and I may well have come through Kintbury. There may have been other, lesser Harleys somewhere around the same time though. We had a rally in Cirencester over the weekend, so there would have been a lot of bikes heading home.
