Lads,

Have just bought my first GS 650 and looking to buy a helmet.

Has anyone any advice on what to buy and whee to take good deal on them?

Cheers

T

I usually buy from helmetcity.co.uk and they will ship across to Ireland. That or try Crossans in Newry.

My two helmets are a Schuberth S1 Pro and a Arai Tour X-3. Both great lids.

I have a Arai Condor and a BMW System 6. The Arai is a tight fit and the System 6 slightly use but I like the flip front.
TBH it all depends on your headshape so i'd suggest going to a shop and trying a variety on 1st.
It's a pity you cant test ride helmets before you buy :nenau

Without doubt, the best helmet I've ever owned I bought last October. The new SHOEI XR1100. Comes with a clear visor and their new CW1 pinlock insert. It's light, quiet, comfortable, loads of room for an earpiece or if you've got massive lugs like me and it looks good.
I paid £299 from Hein-Gericke and then another £69.95 for a Silver Iridium visor,also with CW1 insert,from www.racevisors.co.uk
Since '77, I've had Everoaks,Premiers,a Griffin,Bell,Arai,Davida,Dainese and,as well as the Shoei,at the moment I also use a BMW Enduro but I would definately recommend an XR1100. :thumb2

If you are lokking to spend a little less money then have a look at Caberg, A couple of the models have the 5 star rating and cost between 130 - 200 pounds.

I have the Trip flipfront and find it excellent, very warm in the winter, comfortable and fits well.

But most important is to go to a dealer with a big range and try on a few different brands, a helmet that does not fit 100% is worse than useless.

+1

Then see if your preffered option turns up on here like I did, saved about £150 on a Schuberth C3 and it's fab:bounce1

But more to the point, do you have a GS Motorcycle for sale????

Can't say I've been that happy with mine. I thought it was fine at first but now that I've got a Shoei XR-1100 I've realised how noisy the Trip was and how it just doesn't feel that solid. The visor also had a habit of flying open when doing a life-saver at motorway speeds :blast

Spot on there! It's well worth trying on as many as you can until you find the right one and not to be too swayed by brands. :thumb2

As may have been suggested above: The best helmet is one that fits you properly.
Go to a shop with a decent range and try a few on.

Recently bought a Shark S900, love it! But ... I drove the local dealers mad trying on each helmet, and then going back for a second go! Some I loved didn't go over my head, no matter the size, just not wide enough.. have to try them on.
then got to Topgear superstore website where they give us 12% discount on top of the web prices! :clap just quote UKGSER.

It's good to see that no-one has yet come out with "Only buy a £200 lid if you have a £200 head". Hopefully now that helmets are rated, and we see that cheaper ones can be just as protective as the more expensive, that old canard will be put to bed.

Anyway, as suggested above, you need to just get out and try some on. Everyone's head is a different shape, and each range of helmets tends to only feel just right if your head is the right fit. Having a comfortable helmet that is not going to piss you off is definitely worthwhile.

Once you've decided what you want, then I'd say don't buy from the web. I once did that (the shop did not have the colour I wanted, and I could not wait for them to get one in), and found that the lining had been changed in design between trying and buying, with the result that the new one hurt my ears badly enough that I can't use it. I persevered hoping it would compress a bit, but it never did, and by the time I realised that it was no use for me it was too late to send back. On top of that, of course, it's a bit of a ****'s trick to make use of your local shop's facilities, and then not give them your business.

If you are just looking for personal recommendations, then my Schuberth S1 has been the best helmet I've used so far for all round quality, quietness, and robustness, and the BMW System 6 is the nicest feeling one that I've ever tried on in a shop.
