New here and hoping someone can help

All this info has come from the guys at Park Lane, just spoke to them again and they have re stated that attaching anything directly to the battery will invalidate the warranty.

Ask them for it in writing then, and where exactly it says that.

AFAIK they would have to show the modification caused the event, eg different exhaust with only headers causes the valves to burn out, you're on your own. Paint starts to peel on the beak, no problem.

BTW if they say it'll make the battery fail, then the software etc seems to do quite a good job on its own on some 1200's :(

The Centech panel on Normans requires wiring to the battery so back to square one, seems like most of the solutions to this problem involve wiring direct to the battery, frustrating. Must check that warranty eh.

Option 2 sounds like it could work but I am not a very technical person to be honest.

I meant that to avoid the alleged warranty issue, you could ask bmw to fit the centech (or bmw equivalent if there is one). BMW should also be able to help you achieve option 2 - there must be a lead available that will achieve that - if there is, you'd just need to plug it in - no wiring or battery access required.

£150 for an accessory socket

I'd be politely asking park lane what they propose to do about your perfectly reasonable and not at all uncommon power needs on your £10k/11k/12k/13k (by any means not inconsiderable pile of loot) motorsickle. They don't seem to be trying very hard so far to help you out at a reasonable cost.

On a separate issue, how the feck are you supposed to know what may invalidate the warranty if they don't give you the document ?

Sounds like excessive jobsworthiness here, but I'd be cautious like you in the same circumstances.

John, I agree with you its a joke and I am sure they are just quoting the book at me but that is what they are saying the 3 times I have enquired about it. I would rather not have to even go down that road to be honest hence looking for an accessory socket solution. Thankfully Schtum has come through for me and is sending me the cable to sort it out. :bounce1

ronnie69, yes £150! When I enquired as to a mobile phone charging solution they started suggesting a BMW cable, knowing what these kind of cables cost I chose not to enquire further. Schtum has one of these: http://burnsmoto.com/usb-power-socket-weatherproof.php and is if he can find it a right angled powerlet plug to fit it. This will solve the problem and i wont have to go anywhere near the battery, phew :thumb2 I still can't find the warranty info but it could be buried under a pile of paper amongst the mess of trying to prep for this trip.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice, huge thanks to Schtum for helping out with the cable especially seeing as he has a severe bout of Flu at the moment. These forums are an amazing resource for a new BMW owner like me. Thanks guys.

Hi everyone, I need some help. I have just bought a brand spanking new GS 1200 Adv and am heading off to Sardinia on it beginning of next week. I really really need to be able to charge my HTC desire on route. I have searched these forums and the www and have found many possibilities. The trouble is this, the BMW dealer has told me that wiring anything directly to the battery will invalidate the warranty, so I am stuck with using the standard accessory socket. I need to run a cable from that socket up to the bars and then into my tank bag. The one product that appears to offer this is the "BurnsMoto USB Weatherproof Power Socket" with a Powerlet plug attached and probably a 5ft cable. The problem is that this item is shipped from the US and there is no way it will arrive before I leave. I wish I had found this site and the posts about that cable 2 weeks ago but I didn't. Can anyone suggest a way I can get hold of one of these cables or some UK supplier I can contact.

Any help appreciated as I seem to have run out of options. Yes its 12:30am and I am still searching for a UK supplier that can sort something out. :nenau

Contact PopEye on this forum. He will get something to you very quickly. He has waterproof sockets for fitting to tank bags or even alloy panniers and they plug into the accessory socket below the seat, so no problems with BMW Warranties.

I have one connected to an alloy pannier to charge a Dell Laptop in the pannier, but because my laptop charger needs 90W (7.5A) the CAN-Bus will shut it down, as it will only supply 5A maximum to the accessory socket. I wired mine direct to the battery with an in-line fuse (don't see why it should affect the warranty, unless there was a melt down, which was directly attributable to the connection I made). It isn't going to affect things like final drive warranties, etc.

Your HTC phone will draw a much smaller current (probably about 0.5A, if similar to my HTC HD2 phone) so you should have no problems.

Grey Beard

Hi Grey Beard, thanks for the info, Schtum has sorted me out but I will bear this in mind.

Hi

Mine is a BMW bought and approved power socket, with BMW bought and approved power lead, fitted by BMW technician in BMW garage. Wasn't too silly a price. What's not to like?

Customer Service

If I got customer service like that from my dealer, I know where I wouldn't be getting it serviced

Other than the first 600' service which you should get at a reduced rate ;)

Damn, well I am taking it Ocean Plymouth as I don't actually live in London. So there goes my reduced rate. :blast
The guy at Ocean has quoted me £170 for the service.

budget solution, I bought the BMW to Normal ciggy adaptor from Nippy Normans, think it was around a tenner.

Tucked that female ciggy connection near tool bag, got a cheapo 4x ciggy thing like this:

!CBBKOW!!Wk~$(KGrHqYOKogEy+jC0GeQBNF43nwU3!~~_35.JPG

Just use some cable to extend it....

I then use a standard car charger in my tank bag, also got spare sockets for anything else like cameras (i use a USB ciggy adaptor)

Total cost was about £20 :)
