Not just for works riders
Owners of BMW Motorrad´s uncompromisingly sporty HP2 Enduro now have the opportunity to convert their machines for racing, leisure riding or even long-distance travel thanks to a wide range of accessories available from renowned tuning and development company HPN and aftermarket specialists Touratech.
Ever since Hubert Auriol won the 1981 Paris-Dakar Rally with a motorcycle prepared by HPN for BMW, the Seibersdorf-based company has developed a reputation for building, servicing and testing rally bikes, and has helped many rally riders and adventure travellers fulfil their motorcycling dreams and ambitions. Race fans will remember BMW Motorrad´s beautiful factory R 900 RR that was prepared by HPN and raced at the Dakar in 2000 by riders such as Cyril Despres, Juan Roma and Jimmy Lewis. And even today, HPN is involved in the racing activities of the BMW Motorrad factory team at events such as the Baja California, Erzberg Rodeo, Pikes Peak ´Race to the Clouds´ as well as numerous Cross Country Championship races across Europe.
It is thanks to feedback from riders like Simo Kirssi, Chris Pfeiffer, Casey Jarrow, Sascha Eckert and Gerhard Forster that race-bred developments eventually find their way onto customer machines. It´s no surprise, therefore, that today´s production HP2 Enduro is lighter, faster and considerably more powerful than the factory R 900 RR that was specially built for the Dakar rally just a few years earlier.
Developed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, a range of HPN race-proven parts and accessories for the street legal HP2 Enduro now allows owners to take their machines to the next level - even under extreme conditions.
HPN´s 23-litre tank allows owners to go much further on their HP2 Enduro, without compromising on its excellent ergonomics and off-road ability.
The large polyethylene tank is made by the same company that makes fuel tanks for BMW Motorrad and it therefore meets the same quality standards as the original equipment. Mid and side covers are available in either carbon-fibre composite with a clear epoxy coating, glass-fibre composite in the original HP2 indigo blue colour, or glass-fibre composite that you can paint in a colour of your own choice.
Touratech Executive Director Herbert Schwarz recently rode an HP2 Enduro from Canada to Mexico and commented that with a few, small modifications, it made an excellent touring machine. One such modification was a larger fuel tank, and the Touratech long-distance fuel tank conversion for the HP2 more than doubles its range, with an additional fuel volume of 17 litres. When an HP2 Enduro is equipped with these side tanks, it has a total capacity of 30 litres, which can give a rider up to 550 km of range - enough to get from Milan to Marseille.
Touratech´s handlebar risers allow a good element of adjustability for the HP2 Enduro rider. They not only raise the handlebars by 26mm, but also offer three different handlebar positions towards and away from the rider. The original clamp is used - screwed on to two aluminium blocks - and the blocks are screwed on to the fork stabiliser, making it quick and easy to mount.
It´s often overlooked but it´s very easy to snap a brake or clutch lever, as well as damage your hands while riding your HP2 Enduro off-road. HPN´s carbon hand protectors help avoid those bruised fingers, bent levers and leaking brake or clutch sealing rings during the heat of a race.
If you´re serious about searching out the roughest tracks or the rockiest paths, then an aluminium sump guard is a must. Touratech´s specially developed guard (below) ensures that any knocks or impacts are distributed across the entire engine block, thereby protecting the engine housing in the best possible way. This sump guard is constructed from 4mm aluminium and is so long that it also protects the front silencer and the catalytic converter.
Many other products are available for the HP2 Enduro from HPN and Touratech, including oil coolers, throttle housing assembly guards, reinforced drive shafts, strengthened front and rear rims, twin Xenon headlamps, crash bars, roadbook holders, frame protectors, locking oil filler caps, and exhaust manifold covers (to name just a few). However, with all the options available from both companies, a wise and inexpensive investment is the HP2 side-stand support extension from Touratech, which ensures that your bike won´t fall over when parked on softer ground. It´s made of stainless steel and anodised aluminium, and is quick and easy to fit.
