I’d say since the LC range started.
My 800 looks like new and is 10 years old.But that was before BMW got greedy and enticed in muppets like The Fuse Tester who would have to change their bikes every two,now three years or risk it going pop just outside of warranty.

Hope my goldilocks may 2017 stays OK for the moment no problems, but I honestly do not ride as much as before, keep my time for the grand kids.

I have kept all my GS for at least two years, which was the warranty period up until last year, so you are yet again completely incorrect :)

Isn’t that exactly what I said ?
Have you ever had a GS out of warranty ?

why would anyone have a bike out of warranty, it is sheer peasantry.

Good point ! Mikeyboy, I’ve decided I don’t want that piece of shite you built me because it doesn’t come with a 3 year warranty and SOS button !!

It looks shit, under powered, no cruise control, shit brakes ( but ok because its under powered).

Its even photographed in a pikey's yard.

Yes 4 out of the 5 1200GS’s that I have owned and I’ve put at least 24,000 miles on each of them, one 45,000 miles so I am far better placed than you ever will be on judging their quality.

Congratulations , you boring twat !

That's a nice specimen of an old GS, and by the looks of it, it probably looks better than when it was new.

Being the owner of a 90S I can appreciate the feeling of riding the old bikes. They where well built, and if you want a reliable oldtimer, the old BMWs certainly will serve the purpose with their automobile style electrics and shaft drive that swims in oil (stopped with the paralever).

Some people claims the old ones where "THE BIKES". We tend to forget that even the old ones where modified. As an example, the 90S was launched late -73, and was modified/improved every year, and improvements continued when it turned into 100S, and so on...Even so, even the -74 was and is a good bike...

But, as good as they where at their time, the newer ones in my experience are even better. The newer engines are better in every way. The newer engines needs less maintenance and are able to run longer before needing overhaul (I have tried the whole scale, so this is a statement based on personal experience, not some statement based on what I have read on Internet). Not to mention the frame, suspension and general equipment.

Comparing the old GS to the newest ones will be a bit like comparing DOS6 to WIN10.
There where just as many/few problems with the old ones. But since we did not have internet, we didn't have to relate to all the assholes that just whine, based on what they have read rather than based on experience.
I realize that the new bikes are not without flaws, but neither where the "good old ones".

Anyway. Back to the one in the picture. I'm sure it will provide the rider with lots of fun, and it looks like it's well taken care of :aidan

Couldn't agree more I had a 1982 R100RS even after many years of development mine still had flaws that had to be sorted such as new drive shaft, new gearbox, silencers to name but a few!

If we go by reports in the press today there are seemingly millions of cars of various marques that have been issued with warranty recalls. So to me it is not something unique to the gs range. One only has to look on KTM section of this forum to see that there are recalls discussed on there.

But this thread makes for entertaining reading, reminds me of my school days when everyone went around saying my football team is better than your football team...……………………………..childish or what:D

Your attempt at being smart just failed dismally- congratulations.

No house and no car and commuting to work on a bike all year is not what we all want to achieve at your age. I don't have to own multiple GS's or do mega miles on one only to realise it is best a compromise and when tasked with one specific job the shortcomings are exposed. It is an all rounder and best as a touring bike but built with components from the lowest bidders.

It's not a marketing ploy. It's a service interval that is more than 50% longer than that of BMW Motorrad :augie

And the time taken for each service is 3 times as much. The work required on the KTM V-twins for each service is ridiculous compared to the boxer…

Anyway, it is what it is. But bragging about KTM service interval vs BMW is a bit like bragging about having a fat ugly wife...

I dont have a 1250.

The recall was on my Ducati a while ago. according to the service chap Ducati were on the brink of ditching Brembo because of the numerous issues they were having with quality.

Not sure how he knew this but didnt care as I got lots of spangly stuff and a day out on the new V4s for the inconvenience.

Happy days

A local mechanic would know fuck all what decisions are being made at the factory...so many of them talk utter bullshit
