New rider with a hello and a question about screens on GSA's!

Great forum!! Can't seems to spend enough time on it, there's always something I want to know!

Picked up my new Triple Black GSA a couple of weeks ago and I'm looking forward to a summer of touring - where possible!! I have a trip to Spain and France booked already and I might get another European one in if I'm lucky. Can't wait to see how much stuff I can get in the boxes!

I've trawled the threads through until I'm cross-eyed but I'm struggling to get a simple answer - maybe that's because it might be a complicated question though!

I'm getting noise over the top of the screen in its highest position. I'm 6'1 and I have winglets fitted. If I duck my head an inch or so it becomes quiet so I'm thinking of getting an extender or a different screen. Bearing in mind the Spain trip will be something like 2500 miles there's a good chance I'll be deaf by the time I get back otherwise! There are lots of discussions on screens on here - I've read so many I can't remember where I've seen what - however they mostly centre around the problems standard GS's have with noise - the Givi AF330 + winglets seems to be a popular remedy. Reading the literature online the AF330 fits the standard GS but the GSA isn't mentioned. Does anyone know if it can be fitted to the GSA? Or has anyone done it?

Is there anyone else around the 6'1 mark with a GSA, seat on low (until I've put a few miles on it and things have settled a little, then I'll most likely move it to high) who has successfully solved this problem for less than £200?

I am 6' 3" and Touratech spoiler worked for me on my last 2 GSA's

Givi 330 screen will fit a GSA as well as standard GS if the above does not work for you.

I'm 6'3" on a GSA - seat on high. Have a Ztecnik touring screen which is 5" over stock height. Works well but is a few notes over your budget.

I agree: I had the TT extender & was pleased with it BUT having now fitted a Z Technic, it gets my vote. Functional & looks better.

Laminar lip works for me.No buffeting at all on a 2006 GSA.

Where the wind hits your helmet causes the noise and can be caused by the screen and/or type of helmet.

The cheapest first option (IMHO) is to try the screen in lower positions. Sounds strange but worked for me.

You may also try, if possible, wearing a mates helmet for a couple of miles and see if there is any difference.

As you don't mention buffeting and noise is the only problem, do you wear ear plugs?

Lowering the screen also worked for me, different helmets produce different noises as the wind goes over the vents etc. I think a lot of helmets are designed for sports bikes & are tested with riders head in different positions to the straight up of the gs's

+1 on the TT extender

I'm 6' 2", and with the standard seat on high at teh front, low at the back, and standard screen on high (2010 GSA, by the way) and the TT thingy added....alles ist gute up to about 70mph even with the visor up. I always wear earplugs, and either wear an Aria Viper GT (noisy) or a Shoei Qwest (blissfully quiet) with that set up. With the Visor down (especially with the Shoei) all is peaceful up to 90+ (don't like pushing too much beyond that).

Add some sunshine and twisting road, a couple of tunes from the ipod, and I'm in unbuffeted heaven.

Hi Synchro, unlike the like the teardrop fairings of sportsbikes, standard GS screens have the aerodynamics of a barn door , and the air spilling round & over the screen is roughed up a bit, creating roaring thumps rather than a smooth whoosh.

Lowering the screen moves the noise downwards and away from your face, leaving your head to be blasted by smoother air.

Fitting a screen spoiler or taller screen takes the air up over the top (the same effect as you experienced by ducking your head down) Spoilers have the advantage of lots of height and angle adjustability to play with too. The disadvantage of adding height is that it puts your sightline level or below the top of the screen, which some folks don't like.

Many aftermarket screens are in two sections. This lets some pressurised air bleed through the centre of the screen, instead of all piling up round the edges and breaking over like a wave.

In any case, earplugs are a good idea when riding for long periods, such as on tour. As a bonus, they make the bike feel faster.

Hi,

I have the standard GSA screen and have seat on highest setting. I'm 6'4" and I too get buffetted by the wind. I wear custom moulded ear plugs with filters in and that makes life very bearable. I have a TT extender for the screen which I only use in dry/summer weather cos any extra moisture in the air and the visor on my Schuberth C3 mists up like its going out of fashion but without the extension screen there is no problem. For me the ear plugs get the vote.

I am 6'1 and my screen buffets when in the fully up position. After various tests, I found the best position for me was about halfway where buffeting was reduced but still allowed some air over my visor to clear raindrops, prevent misting and provide fresh air.

Thanks for the info and warm welcome everyone.

I already wear earplugs but the noise is more like a buffeting noise rather than a smooth air rushing past noise, if you know what I mean. Before I go spending money I'll try the screen lower as suggested I think - I naturally (? - not quite sure why it was 'natural'!) went straight to the highest setting so I'll play around with it lower down.

The ZTechnic screens do look the part and I don't think I've ever seen a negative review of them but they're a little pricey. Having said that, if it makes the difference between having a good trip and a great trip maybe they're worth a try if the lower settings don't work.

The TT extender gets a few votes too so that's an option.

The AF330 gets a huge thumbs up from the GS riders but no real supporters on the GSA, perhaps because of their GS only advertising.

Will give the lower settings a try and report back!

TT Extender, best single item I've ever bought for one of my bikes.

I'm 6ft 2in, was thinking of selling my GSA I was getting so much buffeting from the screen. Figured I may as well buy another superbike if I was going to be uncomfotable anyway.

And when I started riding I never had he luxury of waterproof clothing,warm gloves,visors that you can see through,bikes that start,tyres that grip or lights that light,and brakes that stop.

Things have moved on.

Seems a shame that somebody that has just bought a new bike can't ask a question to people that have owned one for a while,without somebody spewing out some keyboard bravado.

My problem is that this is the only bike I can't ride @ over 50 without locking my visor down. I have a GS with low seat and am about 5 9. does anyone else get this?
