New Scottish ferry route

Ha! Just think of all the extra camper vans and motorhomes that could flood the highlands! :D

It’s a ferry to Norway we really need again!
Not sure how a ferry to France is going to flood northern Scotland? Can you explain? It’s not as if the French are going to use it. Is it?

Wishful thinking at the moment I'm afraid...needs some financial input from either Westminster or Holyrood, not really a lot, £3M or so, but I sense no real appetite for such spending.
Hope I'm wrong!

For me living up in Aberdeen, then it means less travel to the port, and not having as much of the Central Belt to endure. Just like going from Newcastle avoids the delights of England south of Hadrian's Wall.

IIRC the cost before was way higher than the Newcastle option, and saved hardly any time, so I'd guess it needs to be a similar cost, maybe £100 more expensive, to the other options to stand a chance.

That’s the problem………the ferry doesn’t make money cause depends on freight traffic, not a load of scooters!! Same, same as last one.
I loved the old Greek one - it was like the start of your holiday!! Pint and band playing 5 minutes after the off. Much better than M6/ M1 jaunt down south 🤔

I agree with all you lot say……BUT….. there’s a new thing to think about nowadays. The ECO point of view.
Think about all those 12 mtr trailers that could be taken off the M6/M74, A1 etc roads . Perhaps this factor may help.

There’s lots of attributes Scotland enjoys, but having the means to provide an economic and viable ferry service to mainland Europe isn’t one of them.
Agree completely. A ferry route to Scandinavia would be great and wouldn’t be competing with other providers on the European routes.

I’d wager my last fiver that the service wouldn’t be running an ECO-flex, gas-powered green ferry.
It’d be the dirtiest, scruffiest polluting tub afloat that was surplus to business requirements elsewhere (barred, even?) in Europe. That alone would piss on any green credentials.
The last one’s operational management raised a few eyebrows IIRC.
Plus, most of the trailered stuff can load onto the container service from Grangemouth anyway. I think?

From today's Courier, 6 April

“At present, we’re in positive discussions with both the UK and Scottish governments regarding a few outstanding issues,” Mr Sloan says.
If an agreement is reached, the service could launch by summer next year."

so looks like next year now....

Well.
That’s another year you’ll be safe from some Portuguese floater, under-manned and crewed by Russians who fall asleep at the wheel?

The planned new ferry route between Rosyth in Scotland and Dunkirk (Nord) has been delayed once more and now looks unlikely to be up and running before 2026.

DFDS, the ferry operator planning the route, said last year that it aimed to start a three-times-a-week service from spring 2025.

However, it admitted in January that the project had been delayed.

How long would that crossing take?
