New to me R1100GS

Picked this up at the weekend - a 1997 R1100GS with just 21600 miles on it

Guy bought it in 2003 when it was 6 years old and ran it until 2011 . He was knocked off his pedal bike and seriously injured so he could no longer ride and the bike has sat in his heated garage unused since then

I went to see a R100RS (there will be a separate thread on that) and had to move the R1100GS to get the R100RS out

First job once I got it home was to remove the fuel tank and drain the old petrol which was pretty stale and the fuel pump strainer was split and the pump had drawn in debris and was seized solid

The rubber hoses , fuel pump damper and U bend were all badly degraded . So first parts order into Motorworks for a new pump , strainer , filter , sealing O ring , fuel hoses and clamps

Fitted a new battery and all the electrics work and the starter motor spins and the bike has good compression

Back brake almost works so will need some attention and there was zero front brake . Once I got the front reservoir cover off I realised why , the master cylinder seals had failed and the brake fluid had dripped onto the RH rocker cover

Removed the RH switchgear , grip and the master cylinder and stripped it all down and will order

a rebuild kit

I'll get the fuel system all rebuilt and check the engine runs OK and it changes gear etc then I'll decide what else it needs.....

It is but they will be getting removed and new braided hoses fitted

I’d say a keeper but I never seem to be able to keep them and sell them on when I see something else I fancy

Looks tidy that. I hope you get away with a master cylinder rebuild- a new master cylinder is pricey.
I've just put a new clutch in mine over the last couple of days. Only 46000 and and plate was down to 4.2mm.
I like the black and yellow combo. Mine's Kalahari yellow, also a '97. I wish my wheels were as clean as those on your bike.

Motoworks delivery received so cracked on with the fuel system re-furb

Re-attached the tank , added a gallon of super unleaded and it fired straight up , it's running a bit lumpy but it has sat for 15 years so next up is a full service , oil , oil filter, air filter , plugs , valve clearances and throttle body sync .

Only done the fuel system so a bit to go yet . It does go smoothly through the gears and the gear indicator works but the brakes need some serious attention

Brake calipers removed and started to strip them down . Pistons are in excellent condition and came out without any problems. Will rebuild with new seals , SS bolts and new brake pads . I’ve ordered a full set of braided stainless lines , so brakes will be tip top when done

I agree, but this one specifically, as I have an 1100GS in need of more than a little tlc... but similar milage to this one...
Nearly no 'history' but the MOT history backs up the milage. I think mine's on about 24k. Red one, metal tank and the 'later' gearbox... I just need the motivation to do something with it. Mine was, however 'on the road' until about 12m ago...

John did those front pads have an onboard spring where the centre pin passes through??

If they don't? Someone went for a cheaper pad and they will rattle in the callipers

I know how much rattles would get on your nerves

Hi Jay - the original pads that were fitted are EBC and do not have the springs , I've fitted Feroddo Platinum as per your picture and they have the springs

Spline lube and pivot bearing check and grease . Splines in great condition . Removed exhaust and headers to give them a bit of a polish . Old ABS2 unit was toast so fully removed .
