Hi
ive just purchased a 2016 GS Aventure (BMW Virgin), ive just come from a Explorer. Im wanting to fit the wiring for a Optimate charger. Looking at where the battery is it doesnt look a easy job. Am i being a bit blonde, or is there a easy way to fit.
Thanks for any advice.
Paul

Negative to the Neg terminal on the battery and Positive to the live post marked in the photo :thumby:

The Optimate 4 is BMW canbus compatible and can connect via the front power point

Why not just stick it in the dash ?
No need to do anything. But lift the weather cap and stick it in the dash.
No need to remove panels, or add extra leads. Just stick it in the dash.
No leads hanging Down.
Just sti.........

See post above

Apologies for resurrecting this thread but its very relevant to my problem - I've done exactly this with my 2017 GSA, connecting the lead to the battery neg and the pos/live post as above - but my Optimate 4 charger tries to desulphate for a couple of hours, then goes to red 'can't do it' mode - even though the battery is fine! Any ideas ? I've ordered a BMW/Hella socket adapter and I'll try it in canbus mode when it comes, but I was hoping to have one lead that I could use for charging and also for heated jacket/gloves when the long scottish winter draws in...

According to the owner’s manual for the 2015 GSW you’re not supposed to charge the battery while it’s connected except via the Powerlet socket just ahead of the handlebars. The system senses when the battery is fully charged and shuts off that socket which prevents further charging and presumably it would open up once the battery’s voltage drops.

Not sure if it makes difference, but I connected the optimate lead for my optimate 4 direct to the battery and mine works fine on my 2016 MY GS. if IIRC remove the right hand panel and you can disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, then slide the battery out and connect the positive lead to the optimate, slide it back in then connect the negative lead for the optimate and battery. As a curve ball have you selected the correct setting on the optimate 4 as you have to select either canbus or non canbus depending on how you intend to use it?

Just for info I have heard that some 1200gs need programming by BMW to accept the optimate signal, it depends on the optimate model number I was told.

Thanks for the help - I am definitely in non-canbus mode. I thought the live post was directly connected to the battery +, but perhaps that's an issue - I will try putting it directly onto the terminals.

Post number 2 is correct, I've fitted quite a few to the jumper post, never had any problems.
Can only suggest a bad connection somewhere..
