Nick Sanders 50,000 mile S10 strip down.

Would defo take the Yamaha though, the post ride stripdown showed how sturdy the bike is, imagine trying that on one of the first GS's of the production line, the EWS would have failed on the first day, FPC on the second and by the time the bike had done 51k with little maintenance I suspect it would have been on FD number 5.

I guess that's why S10's have such strong residuals :eek

To be fair this kinda marketing has been going on for as long as motorbikes have been made. Whether it was endurance trials around Brooklands to show how reliable a bike was or the more recent 'strip down after x miles' that pop up from time to time from the major manufacturers.

TBH I would be pretty shocked if ANY modern motorcycle showed any different to the Super Ten after such a trip (R1200 final drives excepting :D).

Andres

Spot on - did'nt Nick originally do his travels on Triumph Daytona which was also trouble free.
Therefore Yamaha are saying that the S10 is just as good as an early Daytona :aidan

As i have said before, to my knowledge no one has broken one yet, few fork seals is it, oh and some oil can come out of the shaft breather if you motocross/enduro them.
I have had 8 GS's and the last big one was a fuckin disaster for the previous owner , me and the next owner and it was an 1150, reliability is king for me and that trip of Saunders tipped me over the edge to buy one. I know the dealer that provided the bike and cant stand them, i ride an hour in the opposite direction to buy and service my Yams.

Anyway i heard recently that B#W paid Charlie and Ewan £40K for the editing rights on the trip they did on the 1200's so they could cut out the breakdown bits of the film  :hide

Bikes

Why all this mine is better than yours crap, i've just traded my 1150adv for an s10. The 1150 was the best bike i've had, so far, no problems at all but now for me the s10 is better. In my opinion bmw has an extremely loyal following which at times can cause a slightly blinkered attitude in owners. If the only point that can be picked up on with the s10 is low residuals i think i've made the right choice.

Strangely enough no one has actualy said that their bike is better than the S10 ;)

Are S10 owners a bit insecure :comfort

Sell yours and buy something else FFS.............................please God

GS is gone, cash will soon be exchanged for an S10:thumb

For the record I have always said the GS is the better bike to ride, engine as good, handling sharper, ergonomics and luggage better.

The Yamaha wins for reliability and much lower servicing costs, bet I wont have to spend about £1k a year on extended warranty, running repairs and servicing with the Yamaha.

Looking forward to hearing about your first malfunction on your new to you S10, if you admit to a breakdown on it

Nick Plumb used one at the recent MotoGymghana. It did about 5 laps of the course and then had to be "rested" as it had seriously overheated and was pissing out fluids like an elderly airhead rider.:D

There was much mickey taking about how a £12k bike could only last less than 10 minutes of abuse. Apparently, the fault was something to do with the fan failing.

I still like them and just wish they were much lighter. Saw the first World Crosser version last Saturday, again at Touratech. This does look the business. Apparently you could buy a cheapish used S10 and then fit the World Crosser kit to it.

I'll look again in a years time and see what the values are like then.

You really dont notice the weight even pushing it about, but i have just come from an 1150 adv so that may have something to do with it. Give one a go see if you like it. Always a bit of fun taking something out for a test ride.

Can you post up which forum you move across to so we can keep up to date with the S10 and your thoughts once you have it?

50k is not much from a modern bike ffs my old DR800 has 60k on it with all original parts clutch etc ,i know of DR"s with over 100k on them not bad from an old single cylinder plodder :friday .Mind you 50k miles in 3 months would shake the balls from your bag on a single .

My bike is better than the S10. In fact, it is better than any other bike in the world ever made:D

The Yamaha dealer I spoke to today showed me the service schedules for the S10. 6000 mile service takes 3.1 hours. and costs £220. They quoted £280 for the 12K service and the biggie at 24K (valve clearance check) came in at £475. The closest Yamaha dealer to me quoted £350 for the 6k service. Based on the prices quoted the S10 doesn't look that much cheaper to service than a GS.

I paid €130 last month for 12K service in Saint-Lo, France. (Yamaha agents).
