No. It's definitely crap.

By osmosis?

I think what Lee was saying is that someone who has used Garmin devices for some time and has contributed to threads on here on this subject should know this as a result of that experience.

Part of the issue with this thread is the frustration some of us feel when we offer our own experience to help those with problems. Most of us who have used these devices for years have had that moment (well several in fact!) when we have shouted at the bloody thing because it didn't do as expected. The thing is, when we calmed down, we found that in almost every case the "bloody thing" was in fact doing what it had been set up to do. It was, at times a painful process but by looking carefully at the instructions and settings, posting questions on here and a fair bit of trial and error we ended up understanding what was going on and learning how to get the device to do as required.

Having done all that and learnt the lesson that most "problems" are in fact due to the operator failing to understand the implications of settings etc we then have the audacity to share that lesson on here when someone, often admitting to being a new user, posts of dire problems. I and almost all of those tryng to help on here have never said it can't be a machine fault and must be operator error. What is sad is, that for some, the suggestion it might be user error is met by a refusal to ever consider that possibility.

I am coming around to the view that maybe some people don't want to solve the problem but just want to feel justified in having a had a rant.

So if those with problems are wiling to have an open mind and actually share full information about problems when asked I will try to help. For the rest I will just ignore your rantings.

Hi, new on the forum, hello ! and I just got a bike with this device, so reading with some interest that so many are not happy with this device.

A few thoughts

1) Where are the release notes for bug fixes from Garmin
2) If its so troublesome how come the main update is "BMW Motorrad Navigator VI software version 4.70" as of March 3, 2017
3) Does the device work OK away from a BMW Bike? as the I-level updates for the bike have been coming out like mad recently. Since November 16 the bikes software have gone through at least 5 iterations (are some there to help Nav 6 work with the bikes?)
4) When I updated the unit, there were 7 or 8 updates, maps 2018v2 being one of them. I said update the bottom one on the list (it went on) and they all vanished except the maps update. So does it install all the bits and bobs in one hit or have these magically gone walkabout? If so that's a pretty dumb error on Garmin Express
5) Hunting down other stuff from express, it shows a load of bits that are optional. Saying something along the line of "not in use on your device", but is this because its turned off and plugged in a usb on my PC in update mode or extra rubbish that even if I add does nothing ?
I mention because two seem potentially vital
a) Language, appears NONE installed so added 135meg of English
b) BWM buttons, a small file which I'm guessing adds to or fixes issues with the on bike controls.

Any thoughts or info about my ramblings above appreciated

I thought there was a list of bugs sorted but that might just be me remembering how it used to be.
I think you will find you had English all along, unless it talked to you in Klingon or something. I can't comment on the BMW buttons because I don't have them but I do think you are right, these updates sound essential for those of you using the buttons.

Lee dude, some very useful links there ... thanks for posting .
I was unaware you could share a route over Bluetooth direct from gps to gps.
(Friends had previously emailed routes amongst the group prior to a trip , but it seems that step is completely unnecessary! )

I believe its only the very latest devices that its possible to do that with.

My experience in aviation taught me that 99.9% of those "what the f...k is it doing now?" situations were operator error; this seems to be an entirely similar First World Problem. Also, it is plainly obvious that common sense ain't that common any more, and why do so many people always seems to believe everything that goes wrong is somebody else's fault? It is encouraging to see a number of patient, informed posters trying to be reasonable but sadly depressing to witness those who refuse to accept they might be wrong.

thanks very much,
re language, I had not tried to use prior to the update
went to test yesterday and couldn't even get the cover off to slot on the bracelet !!! (was in a rush so didn't have time to read manual.... I never knew about "lever 2" hidden behind device ! )

will test today and will report back my first impressions

It probably is user error. The primary error being paying hundreds of pounds for a navigation device to simplify your navigating that requires a week to study the user manual ( The Grey one's quote ) before you can use the bloody thing.

At that price it should be simple to use not complex.

I use smartphone and TomTom / Waze app and it's easy and it works. For roads at least as I don't live in the Sahara.

I would challange anyone who has not used a smartphone before to just pick it up and know how to use all its functions. We tend to work out how our latest phone works because it is just a step onwards from the last one. It is exactly the same as with a new SatNav, when I bought my 390 I could use it straight away because of my previous experience. I used the manual to find out what else it could do or how its opperation might differ from my previous device. I played with it and learnt a lot in the process which will no doubt help when I buy the next one. The whole point of a dedicated SatNav is it can do far more than the simple solutions offered by phone Apps.

If you can't or won't spend time learnng how these devices work then of course you will get better results with a simple phone app. Providing you are familiar with a smartphone of course!

The latest top of the range devices like the Nav 6 are complex because they offer the option to set them up for many different uses. Having said that the user manual is only 20 pages. I know people these days have short attention spans but I would have thought that having spent all that money then owners might like to know what thier new toy can do and how to set it up.

will test today and will report back my first impressions

First impressions

Trying to clip on the bike was very difficult
Took ages to boot and then appeared to go wrong and took further 3 mins to work out life then needed a reboot - (put that down to first use since all the updates)
Battery came up as flat even though had been on via USB for 3 hours doing updates two days prior
Even with the ignition key on it won't charge (only charges when engine running) which is stupid and starts trying to turn its self off when trying to use.
When fitted obscures the rev counter from 4 k to 8k rpm which is dumb

Input an address via post code
Lots of noise on address entry page, this made finding postcode input hard work - compared to other devices
Std keyboard entry is awful - put it back to qwerty
Appeared to argue with my selection and jumped back to numbers when I wanted characters - (being positive let’s pretend it was user error ! )

Drove off quite impressed with brightness and clarity.
Then realised the view is cluttered with rubbish I don't want to see - but when I got into layers there's the least options to de clutter of any nav I've seen. I guess its hidden elsewhere?
Also noticed clarity of what I don't care about is very clear HD
Clarity of what I want to see is fuzzy SD
Speed camera feature picked up the one right near where I live – Nice
Can’t see where your are going on the map, thought it must be in 2D view and not helped with massive bar at the top taking away 20% of screen acreage, - but it is in 3D it just doesn’t lean over anywhere near enough !

No route selected - !!!
As I deliberately went off what I suspect would have been the chosen route to go via the speed camera, I realised there was no actual guidance happening !
Didn’t find a menu to go back to my route, wouldn’t find my route, couldn’t find how to cancel a route or to enter a new route.

Bike Info display looks god – until a friend pointed out the top speed on each journey could be an issues when certain people ask to see it !!!

Now I get there’s a learning curve but for the first 10 mins that seems like hard work and a total lack of intuitiveness built in to the base software.

impressions before or after reading the user maunual?

Re the charging issue, the device wont be being charged while you are downloading updates (3 hours suggests a poor connection speed - my update to 2018.2 took 35 mins)
My device is live when the ignition is on, does not need the engine to run. I agree its bloody stupid if your bike does not do that, but then that would be the bike not the device
I agree about the input method, its a bit clunky.
The problem you have with layers can be fixed when you read the manual and find out how to change or remove them
Stopping route is done by the big cross icon that should be on the screen when you are running a route. Only use this to cancel a route, normal stopping and starting along a route is done simply by turning the ignition off. If the stop icon does not show on a route you an add it in. There is an option to set which icons show on a route. I have the stop and skip functions as standard.
If you can't see where you are going on a route and there is no guidence it suggests that you had not actually started a route.

Stick with it, read the manual and ask questions on here. Plenty of people will help. You will end up getting good use out of your purchase
Or just declare it shite. You will get support for that view too. This option also has the benefit of requiring the least effort

had read manual from here, seems very basic and glanced through paper one nothing extra
will investigate layers
BT infinity allegedly 40mbits/sec
how do I charge it then? just left it plugged in PC for another 2 hours so its got enough grunt to let me play indoors and saw its been sitting all along on a splash screen, now your point seems to indicate it would have helped charge.
yes I guess it didn't start route... but what did it do after I input postcode and then pressed what seemed to be "obvious" next steps to go to my chosen destination?

I'm not sure about the charging issue, I can't say I have ever tried to charge mine through a computer. I have had a couple of older devices that had flat battieies when i was handed them to put routes on These charged up enough for that process after being connected to a computer for an hour or so. As long as your device powers up when its on the bike I would not worry much, it will charge up on the road.

But as for starting a route or changing layers these points are covered in the downloadable manual. Page 5 for starting a route and page 6 for layers. you might like to go back to that manual and follow the instructions.

I'm not doubting the ability of the unit to perform just it's complexity. Maybe it could have an easy mode option?
Hat off to all the knowledgeable and patient input by the gurus. I just think it shouldn't be needed in 2017.

Oh, and I don't know a quarter of what my smart phone can do but it is good for calls, texts, photos / video and internet. I recently added Spotify to sing along to.
