My mates bike wouldn't start this morning ,he has no neutral light or any gears coming up on the LCD display , guessing that the bike thinks it's in gear and wont start !! it's a 2006 1200 GSA , two questions , is it the gear sensor at the back of the engine ? if so does a new one need programmed to the bike of can it just be changed plug in and away you go ?

cheers

It should still start with the clutch pulled in.
If it doesn't the clutch switch by the handlebar lever needs adjusting.

I have fancy Titax levers on mine but not quite fancy enough because they don't trigger the clutch switch.

Do they def have a clutch switch ??? He says he doesn't need the clutch in to start it !! if it was faulty is it a coincidence that it has fooked up and the neutral indicator has fooked up together. Not sure whats going on now

Clutch needs to be in and sidestand up, otherwise: no start

Bike def runs with side stand down as I was asking him about that ,my 1200 which is 2009 will also start with the stand down

Side stand kills the engine for safety if a gear is selected with the stand down. Engine will normally happily run in neutral with the side stand down.

Engine SHOULD start in gear with the clutch lever pulled in, providing the microswitch at the lever is working correctly. The switch operating point can be adjusted by means of a tiny allen screw clamp, IIRC its beneath the lever.

My gearbox switch started playing up; would only start with clutch in and sidestand up.

Drying it out, and cleaning connections/filling with acf grease and so far it is working fine.

My 11r is the same, clutch in/stand up or doesn't do anything.
