No replacement final drive units

I've been waiting a long time to get my hands on a fecked unit.

I have a man who i think can rebuild them. He rebuilds large gear and hydraulic units units used on jcb, cranes and dustcarts etc etc so used to dealing in ft/lbs nm's that are in four figures.

Sounds very promising.

Providing a warranty is an issue after a fd repair

Rasher's found an ex-racing mate of his or summat like that (it gets so confusing who is who) who will rebuild 'em with quality parts.

Apparently he's taking it down there before it goes, so the mechanic must be good :thumb2 We can only hope that he does not do his own final drive oil change before he goes, or it will be a bit of a waste.

Between the pair of 'em the problem is solved.

Gonna do them myself, gone round the estate and nicked all the bean tins out of the recycling boxes.

Got some plasticine to make the outer casing mould, and an angel delight to get the internal dimensions sorted.

Started saving beer bottle tops for making the bearing cases (these are harder metal than the bean tins) and some hundreds / thousands jobbies the bird puts on her cakes for the rollers.

Should have a few knocked up by Christmas :thumb

Scrimmingers in Sleaford can rebuild them, nice cup of tea there to!!

I was chatting to Mike Pearce a BMW Independant in Cardiff who was servicing my bike last week about this very issue. He said if mine failed he could rebuild it for £350. Put my mind at rest as the thought of a £1300 bill was leaving me looking for the sick bucket. So I've decided to keep it.:)

When my FD bearing was fecked, Bahnstormer said they could rebuild/replace the bearings if a new FD was unavailable (luckily for me it was).

Perhaps its worth giving them a call ??

I wouldn't mind having a tinker with a failed unit...... I can't see why they should be so difficult to repair?

They aren't when compared to major stuff like marine, industrial and agricultural equipment. You just need to get tooled up to do the job properly eg castellated drive sockets, jigs/fixtures, dial test indicators etc, hence access to a machine shop is almost essential.

If someone can do this for circa £350 and advertise it, they could be onto a winner.
If my drive was fecked, I'd take it anywhere in the country rather than pay the £1300 bandied about.

:rob

Well i picked up a loaner last night and on speaking to the service manger they have ordered both a new drive plus bits to rebuild mine to see what turns up first but...

He did say that the tooling from BMW cost £600 and the parts cost about £100 (assuming the CW is in good shape) so you would need to repair a few of them before you turn a profit.
Just repairing the units mentioned on this site would keep you going of months. I think patz12 of this parrish made his own tools as they were on back order from BMW, just like the new drives (at least something is reliable and consistent). But from the the look of his work I'd trust patz12 to do mine. That's cos he's a real engineer not like those tossers in Bavaria.:augie

Interesting thread but no mention of warranty anywhere :nenau

Post number 44:
I now have the knowlage. I would consider doing some rebuilds but how could you warrantee a rebuild even new ones break.
It's important that everyone checks their FD now and again.
Remember my FD had only the slightest symptoms of failure if I kept riding it would have chewed itself up.
I reall think the only thing that could fail is the small needle bearing, the other 2 bearings are real heavy duty jobs.

I still mainain, do not power wash the rear axle there is a lot going on there and why ask for trouble.

OK, so the spelling makes it difficult to read :beerjug:

The issue is, as Patzx12, said elsewhere in his article, that you are replacing parts like for like. The bearings seem to be unique to BMW. So, holding the thought that new ones fail, how would you warrant (y) the repair if the design is at fault and you make no changes :nenau
