Final Drive Problems

What makes you think your 800 will be issue free?

What if it turns out to be the 1200gs's younger, and nastier brother? :nenau

Can you really risk taking it on long journeys... :eek :P

Well Snoopy the engine is tried and tested for sure :thumb

The running gear is all quite simple really :thumb

Long journeys? For sure I will not only risk it but be happy to do so :)

I can change a chain and sprockets misen in the desert if I have to, with simple tools I can carry.... noooo problems :thumb

Didn't both Ted Simon and Sam Manicom get stranded with drive shaft failure :augie

One pal stranded in Ireland, another pal stranded in France... with drive shaft problems :augie

I think what a lot of the 1200GS owners are afraid of is that the 'likkle baby' 800 is gonna be a better 'bike :clap

Note I didn't say 1100 or 1150 owners....

Why would you not allow a Motorrad dealership inspect the bike:confused: If your Ford car is broken and you want to persue a warranty claim then you dont take it for example to a Nissan garage.

It seems that BMWs request in this respect was reasonable, if they had conceded on the goodwill repair it is highly likely that any associated delivery costs(if any) would have been refunded as well.

I understand that your faith may be with your local independent specialist repair shop, but in warranty matters you are always going to be locked into the dealer network.Otherwise why would they set up a Motorrad dealership network in the first place.

Its a good post in so far as you have shared your experiences and others can check the rubber boot and driveshaft and perhaps avoid the problem you have highlighted.I'm genuinely sorry you ended up out of pocket with little chance of being reimbursed, and no I dont work for BMW, but I did work for many years in the motor trade( including warranty claims) and what BMW asked for was only the industry norm.

Put it behind you as a bad experience and just enjoy your bike again:thumb2

Rear drive

Lookijng at the piccys that has obviously been going for a very long time not just a couple of weeks definatly worth sending back to BMs, I wonder if some disgruntled employee had a pee in it during assembly?.
O rit's been used for serious off roading including wading in the past.
So take it back they can only say no.

What exactly am i checking? The rip-tie on the gaitor? Please detail exact checks so that i can learn from this sorry story... hope its back on the road now

Where the swinging arm connects there is a gaiter secured at the engine side with a zip tie - on mine this was not tight so water could enter - if yours is tight then I guess you're ok:thumb

Invest in a new zip tie and then remove the old one, carefully pull bak the gaiter and check the condition of the components inside:nenau

The 1200's problems didn't surface until the bike was released and then tried and tested. The 1200 doesn't have huge flaws in the mechanics, it's the build quality that is letting it down like this stupid cable tie letting in water . What's to say the build quality won't let the 800 down as well?

And the 800's engine has been tested only on tarmac. Will it have the low down grunt? Probably not because BMW have, like the 1200, focused on power delivery which looks good on the stats. The detuned '650' engine will probably make for a better GS engine.

Don't want anybody to worry or anything. :P

Although I've got the DRZ I wouldn't go for BMW again. KTM are really outdoing them in the quality stakes. The 640 Adv, a ten year old bike, already outdoes the 800GS in flexibility, weight and mechanics. Wake up and smell the coffee.

It's a good job you're still on the GS forum and not a DRZ one...perhaps you are:eek:

I can see it now.... "DRZs are a load of underpowered shite as an ADV bike, they vibrate apart and need all sorts of extra equipment to get them past the channel crossing, I'll never buy another but will be going back to a proper ADV bike, the GS"

On the two occasions that my gearbox has been removed by my local dealers, (once to get the seals done and once to replace the whole box). the boot was not been correctly re-installed. On both occasions I had to take the bike back to the workshops to get the dealer to fix their mistake.

I reckon that this wouldn't have helped the lifespan of the UJ...

I would suggest that if you have had any works done that required the removal of the swinging arm you should check to make sure that the boot is correctly seated. You don't want to end up with a UJ the same as KevinC

Errrr mmmm Sorry Snoopy... but Herbert at Touratech has already tested the F800GS over thousands of miles in Africa. Wuz speaking to him at the NEC. The 800GS has far more midrange power that the 800S/ST so that will do nicely for me. He also says it's far better off road than the 1200GS... and he should know eh!

Sorry... but I'll trust his known 'hands on' comments and experience before your suppositions :thumb

If your bike was anything like my old GSA then that would not have happened. The lower drive shaft boot would not seal and kept popping off letting gravel dirt and dust in but in your case it would of let the water out.

The corrosion you have is certainly at its advanced stage.
I have quality control issues with my GSA and I definitely thought when you buy a BMW you were buying the best money could buy but at the end of the day (probably a Friday) its put together by humans.

Good luck with it
