My 1150 with 32,000 KM on it has developed a creaking noise from inside the rubber boot area on the final drive. There are no leaks and the boot is intact. It is very obvious if I bounce on the seat at standstill, today a mate got on his knees and listened and said its definately coming from inside the boot. All help appreciated as to what it might be. Thanks.:confused:

Paralever thrust bearings. Either worn out or need adjustment.

It depends on who does it Luke.

No special tools needed to drop out the final drive but you'll need someone who has actually replaced the bearings to give you the detail on that part. I dropped out the FD but had the bearings replaced along with the input shaft seal at Scriminger Engineering. Use the search button or Google.

I think that the bearings are about £12.00 each.

There is probably a "How To" on Adventure Rider, www.advrider.com

No.

Adjustment is easy, if fiddly.

Replacement involves more dismantling but not difficult and the bearings are a few quid.

To check it is the thrust bearing adjustment, get the rear wheel off the ground, grasp the wheel at top and bottom then pull/push with opposite hands.

Grasp the wheel at the 9 and 3 positions and repeat the pull/push.

If there is any discernible play in all four directions it's the thrust bearings.

Make tea, search the forum and all will be revealed.

Could it possibly be the rear UJ on the drive shaft siezed ??

May well be worth checking.......

Your paralever bearings are bone dry.
I don't think adjusting or greasing will help, they're likely to be fecked if it creaks.
It's a simple replacement job.

And meltdown will take how long ? Is it ok to ride for a week or two ?

When mine were replaced they didn't just creak, you could feel the steps as the rollers in the bearing moved from notch to notch in the wrecked races when you stood alongside the bike and compressed the suspension via the rear rack. I rode for a few weeks like that until I could get them changed - mechanic here didn't seem to think it was a big deal, since they were already beyond greasing and adjusting.

Handling can't be helped by the free play (but I didn't notice anything terrible), dunno if there's a catestrophic failure mode?

I'm not one to argue with the infallible St. Eptoe but...........:o

Mine started to creak, I left it for quite a while and then adjusted/greased, they have been fine for about 15K miles (so far). The Sage himself even checked the rear wheel play in November last year and pronounced it to be "awright."

I've started out to adjust another bike's (that wasn't creaking) but found the bearings to be fecked and needing replacement.

As the adjustment really requires the adjuster to be removed and cleaned, it's an easy job to check the bearing condition at that point.

Hi Luke,
I've just put a post on Paralever Adjustment thread.
Have a look & have a go at inspecting bearings if you like, but a creaking noise probably indicates something else.
If you have the time & fancy a run out, take a scoot up & we will have a look.
Brian.

Carry on riding, you won't be left stranded by the side of the road.

I've been adjusting/ greasing mine for the last 3 years . I will get around to changing them, but only when the rear is off for something else :augie:D

Hi Luke,
, but a creaking noise probably indicates something else.
.

Nope, when dry they creak like an old wooden galleon in a force 10. Have you ever heard a bike with them creaking ?
